Acubalance Laser Baby Program

The laser fertility protocol offered at Acubalance was initially inspired by the positive reports for two protocols out of Japan and Denmark.  We have since improved and updated our laser for fertility approach based current research and our clinical experience.

Our clinical director, Lorne Brown BSc., Dr.TCM, CPA, FABORM, had been reviewing over the past few years (since 2009) the literature on low level laser therapy (LLLT/photobiomodulation) including using LLLT for fertility.

Dr. Brown has attended professional development courses on cold lasers & laser acupuncture, consulted with a mitochondria expert experienced with laser acupuncture and other practitioners who use low level laser therapy (LLLT) for fertility.    Lorne travels internationally to present Acubalance Vancouver's laser/photobiomodulation approach for fertility, endometriosis and sperm motility to his colleagues.

The Acubalance protocol takes into consideration our fertility experience since 2000 and the current literature on LLLT mechanisms and dosage to formulate our laser protocol to help rejuvenate eggs and sperm motility.  Dr Brown regularly consults with laser experts in the States, Australia, Japan, Netherlands and Canada to continue to improve on the Acubalance protocols.

Mechanism of low level laser therapy (LLLT) for fertility:

  1. Enhance mitochondrial activity and ATP production
  2. Increase blood flow
  3. Regulate inflammation and to help reduce oxidative damage
  4. Softening of scar tissue.

An important reminder: Acubalance’s approach is to support the body's innate ability to heal and to self-regulate. Laser is not a magic pill. Diet, lifestyle (sleep, exercise, rest) and mental/emotional health are necessary for the body to regain and maintain well-being and for you to reach your peak fertility potential.

LLLT/photobiomodulation is safe, pain-free and a non-invasive intervention that supports your body on a cellular level by increasing cellular ATP (energy), increase blood flow and regulate systemic inflammation to create an environment that supports the body's ability to self regulate and thrive including optimal fertility.

The Acubalance Laser Baby Program has been designed to allow for optimal egg quality benefit. Six treatments during the follicular phase (Menstrual bleed to ovulation)  and 1/week during the luteal phase (second half of  the menstrual cycle - from ovulation to bleed or positive pregnancy test)

The Laser Baby Program includes:

  • 3 months of  Laser or combined traditional acupuncture and laser
  • Fertility Audit where we recommend tests to measure biological markers (listed below)
  • Diet, lifestyle and stress reduction recommendations
  • Herbal and Supplement consults
  • Assist you in tracking key body functions & signs  (physical and emotional) indicative of good health and fertility

The Laser Baby Program is recommended for 3-months.

Each session is approximately 45-60 minutes and includes laser acupuncture combined with fertility acupuncture. The timing of the laser sessions is 3 times a week in the follicular phase (first half of your menstrual cycle - menses to ovulation) and 1 laser acupuncture treatments a week in the luteal phase (second half of your menstrual cycle - ovulation to next bleed).  It is OK if you conceive during the 3months.  We actually encourage it :-)

After the 3 months, if not pregnant, you continue on a maintenance program of one to two sessions a week for an additional few months.

If you want more information and have questions about joining the Laser Baby Program please contact Acubalance at 604-678-8600 or clinic@acubalance.ca  We will take down your information and follow up with you with more details.

Have the following tested through your GP or Olive Fertility Centre.  We can order them at Acubalance if your MD will not.  However, if requisitioned from Acubalance,  none are covered by MSP so require you to self pay.  Baseline testing now and then repeat these tests 3 months after starting your laser acupuncture sessions.  These tests are part of the fertility audit recommended in the Laser Baby Program.

Recommended Testing:

  1. Semen analysis if you have a male partner you are TTC with …. If related to male factor then treating female alone may not help embryo quality.
  2. Hematology (CBC)
  3. Ferritin
  4. FSH  (Day 3 of cycle)
  5. E2  (Day 3 of cycle)
  6. TSH
  7. LH  (Day 3 of cycle)
  8. HBA1C
  9. B12
  10. Triglycerides
  11. Heart Rate Variability (HRV) done through Acubalance
  12. AMH  (Fee, not covered by MSP.  Can be requisitioned at Acubalance or by your MD)
  13. Vitamin D  (Fee, not covered by MSP.  Can be requisitioned at Acubalance or by your MD)
  14. Track any pregnancies, miscarriages, and births for 18 months.

Recommended Tracking:

Your Acubalance practitioner will help you track the following:

  • Detail menstrual cycle diary

Frequently Asked Questions:

1.) What if I am doing an IVF cycle?

If you are doing an IVF cycle then we suggest laser 3/week during your stim phase leading up to your retrieval... And then laser acupuncture immediately before and after your embryo transfer to support uterine receptivity and implantation.

2.) What do you recommend after the 3 month program is completed?

Continue to follow our approach for improving egg quality which includes the fertility diet, lifestyle, stress reduction, acupuncture, herbs, supplements and cold laser (LLLT) treatments.   This is still the  pre-conception period but it is more maintenance and not as intense as the Laser program.  Instead of 3 times a week we recommend once a week if you are under 37 and continue twice a week if 38 or older or have been diagnosed with poor egg/embryo quality and low ovarian reserve.

If you move into an IVF or medicated cycle after the Laser Baby Program then it is recommended combined laser and acupuncture 3 times a week during the stimulation phase (from your bleed to IUI or egg retrieval.  If you are doing a FET then 2/ week until transfer.

If you are TTC naturally then 2/week in follicular and 1/week in luteal would be good maintenance.  Based on your age and reproductive history (and diagnosis) we may recommend less or more.

3.) Are you still accepting women into your Laser Baby Program?

Yes, every month we can accept up to 15 new women into the program. We are limited by laser systems and docs availability. So please contact us (e: clinic@acubalance.ca or p: 604-678-8600) if you want to join in for our next group 3 month Laser Baby Program.

If you cannot commit to 3 months or the frequency of the Laser Baby Program you can still book at laser for fertility treatments at Acubalance. You are just not eligible for the program discount.

4) What if I am needle phobic?

If you are needle phobic then you receive just laser acupuncture and no needles.  The fee is $100 per session.

5.)  The program requires 6 sessions during the first half of my cycle.  Three each week for the first two weeks?  Can I come consecutive days or do I need to have day breaks between laser acupuncture sessions?  Can I come 5 in one week and once the following week to have my total of 6 sessions during the first half of my cycle?

Yes.  Consecutive is OK.  The key is 6 sessions in the first half of your cycle.  You can choose any combination over the two weeks to reach 6 sessions.

6.) How can  laser (LLLT/Photobiomodulation) help with my fertility?

The mechanism of low level laser therapy (LLLT/cold) for fertility is as follows:

  1. Enhance mitochondrial activity and ATP production
  2. Increase blood flow
  3. Regulate inflammation and to help reduce oxidative damage
  4. Softening of scar tissue.

Until recently, Western reproductive medicine has traditionally maintained that ageing and declining egg quality is an irreversible process. However, ground-breaking research with low level light therapy conducted in Denmark and Japan is showing that it may be possible to improve egg quality, slow down the ageing process and significantly improve fertility in women and men. The studies show that low level laser therapy (LLLT) used on acupuncture points on the neck and over the ovaries appears to enhance mitochondrial activity and ATP production, increase blood flow and helps to reduce oxidative damage.

We see enormous potential in this research for women who are struggling to conceive—particularly those who are of advanced maternal age, diagnosed with poor egg quality or have been diagnosed with endometriosis and PCOS.

All our cells are powered by little structures called mitochondria. Eggs have about 200 times more mitochondria than any other cell. When eggs are developing, they use a tremendous amount of energy. And early embryo division and implantation requires lots of energy. After 35 years, the mitochondria wear down. At age 40, nine out of 10 eggs are abnormal.

Studies show that the mitochondria of older eggs is capable of producing significantly less ATP, which is the source of cellular energy. This has a significant impact on fertility, as the rate of division and successful implantation of embryos has more to do with how much energy (ATP) than with maternal age per se. Consequentially, the capacity of the cold laser to improve the ATP production of eggs has a potentially dramatic effect on their viability.

Furthermore, it is known that older follicles have fewer defenses against cellular damage caused by oxidative stress, and that this is related to poorer IVF outcomes. Studies suggest that LLLT treatment could also help with this condition, along with other complications, which impede fertility later in life.

Increasing energy level (ATP) in the cells, improved blood circulation, softening of scar tissue and a reduction in inflammation.  These factors are all beneficial to female reproduction in general and to the receptivity of uterine lining.

The recent studies in Japan and clinical results in Denmark have delivered very promising results in this direction. The Danish report showed that LLLT had a pregnancy rate of 66% success for women after at least 4 years of failure with other ART methods. LLLT studies have also pointed to the efficacy of laser treatment in raising the quality of the male partner’s semen in particular motility.

Similarly, the Japanese studies have shown a connection between improved fertility and laser therapy, concluding that even in low doses, laser therapy can help improve the woman’s chances of conception. Under the direction of Dr Toshio Ohshiro at Sanno Hospital, an extended trial on LLLT was performed in 701 infertile patients, 156 (22.3%) of whom became pregnant.   This resulted in a successful live birth rate in over half (50.1%) of those pregnancies.
