How to Get FREE Publicly Funded IVF in British Columbia – Step-by-Step Guide
Starting July 2, 2025, British Columbia will launch a publicly funded in-vitro fertilization (IVF) program, providing eligible residents with financial support for fertility treatments. This initiative aims to make IVF more accessible, offering up to $19,000 for a single standard cycle, including necessary medications.

Understanding the Program
To qualify for this funding, applicants must:
- Age: Be at least 18 years old and 41 or younger at the time of application.
- Residency: Be residents of British Columbia and enrolled in the Medical Services Plan (MSP) at the time of application and throughout the treatment period.
The program covers various components of the IVF process, such as orientation, egg retrieval, sperm retrieval, fertilization, blastocyst culture, single embryo transfer (fresh or frozen), and required medications. However, it does not include services like preimplantation genetic testing, fertility preservation, embryo storage, or costs associated with donor eggs, donor sperm, or surrogacy outside of IVF treatment.
Clarification on Age Eligibility
The general age eligibility states that the individual undergoing embryo transfer must be 41 years of age or younger at the time of application. However, there is an exception for those who turn 42 between April 1, 2025, and July 2, 2025—they will still be eligible as long as their fertility specialist applies on their behalf within the program’s application period.
This means:
- If you are 41 or younger at the time of application, you are eligible.
- If you turn 42 between April 1, 2025, and July 2, 2025, you can still apply.
- If you turn 42 before April 1, 2025, or after July 2, 2025, you would not be eligible.
One important piece of information not listed on the Ministry of Health website that we have heard but cannot confirm yet, is there will be a mean income test as part of the eligibility. This has not been confirmed yet and once we know at Acubalance we will share with you. Since this is still unknown and since the mean income test would be performed at the government level and not the IVF clinic level, we suggest you get your application sent in sooner than later.
Preparing for IVF Success
While the financial support is substantial, the success of IVF largely depends on individual health factors, including egg and sperm quality, as well as uterine receptivity. To optimize these factors, engaging in preconception care is crucial. Starting this preparation 3 to 6 months before your IVF cycle can greatly enhance your chances of success.
