At age 40, I was pregnant for the first time in my life!

After having tried to conceive on our own for a year and a half, my husband and I were referred to a doctor at the UBC Fertility Clinic. After many tests, I learned I was not a candidate for IVF because of my low ovarian reserve. — I had a low antral follicle count, and my FSH was 14. It is desirable for AFC to be at least 5 and FSH to be below 10. — On top of the existing issues, I was 40 years old – no spring chicken! But, now at age 40, I was pregnant for the first time in my life!

Through a recommendation from a friend who had received treatments at Acubalance for her infertility (she did conceive after having had treatments at Acubalance), my husband and I decided we’d give it six months before we explored other options (superovulation, egg donor, adoption). I went for a consultation at Acubalance, and I found the staff to be very kind, gentle, and patient as they explained to me what the treatments consisted of and how they may be able to help me. They explained that the treatments were geared to improving the quality and perhaps the number of my eggs, and to enhance the quality of my uterine lining. I decided to give it a go as I had nothing to lose!

I found that I looked forward to the weekly appointments for two reasons: they left me feeling optimistic and very, very relaxed. In addition to acupuncture, they put me on to some Chinese herbs (they tasted foul, but eventually we had my herbs switched from the tea to capsules that I couldn’t taste). After three months, the herbs started to make me feel dizzy, so they took me off the herbs and we continued the acupuncture treatments.  On about the 4th month of my treatments, my husband and I lined up an appointment to start on my next period “superovulation”, treatments which would be extremely pricey and which had a low success rate. Lo and behold, my period did not come! I took three home pregnancy tests to confirm what I really couldn’t believe was true! At age 40, I was pregnant for the first time in my life! I had a very, very healthy pregnancy with no complications whatsoever, and our little angel was born in December. We look forward to conceiving again this year!

If you are having similar infertility issues as I did, my sincere advice to you is to be open minded and give acupuncture and Chinese herbs a go. What have you got to lose?
