Synchronicity, Consciousness & the Power of Letting Go with Dr. Anna Yusim
Episode #169 Synchronicity, Consciousness & the Power of Letting Go with Dr. Anna Yusim
What if fulfillment isn’t about doing more, but learning to see—and live—differently? In this episode, Dr. Lorne Brown reconnects with psychiatrist, executive coach, and Fulfilled author Dr. Anna Yusim for a deeper exploration of synchronicity, intuition, consciousness, manifestation, and our connection to something larger than ourselves. They discuss how meaningful coincidences can become sources of guidance, why surrender can be especially difficult for high achievers, and how excessive control may actually block the outcomes we are trying to create.
Anna also explores the possibility that consciousness extends beyond the brain, the relationship between science and spirituality, interconnectedness, and what near-death experiences may suggest about life beyond the physical body. Ultimately, the conversation asks what can happen when we quiet the noise, release our attachment to outcomes, and become more receptive to life.
Key Notes
- Synchronicity is personal. What transforms a coincidence into a synchronicity is the meaning we give it.
- Intuition requires less noise. Quieting mental and emotional static can make internal guidance easier to recognize.
- Trying harder isn’t always the answer. For high achievers, excessive attachment and control can interfere with the very outcome they are pursuing.
- Being and doing need balance. Anna contrasts the action-oriented “yang” approach with a receptive “yin” approach based on being, peace, joy, and openness.
- Interconnectedness changes how we live. Seeing ourselves as part of something larger can shift us away from isolation and toward compassion, responsibility, and connection.

Anna Yusim
Whether we live in a hostile and friendly universe is a function of our own vibration and what we put out into the world. And if you are putting out a vibration of hostility, anger, hatred, doubt, jealousy, et cetera, all the time, that’s going to be a difficult universe to live in. If you’re putting out a vibration of striving to be a better person, of love, perseverance, courage, hope, positivity, that’s a much better, that’s what you are drawing in. So I think that ultimately the universe is inherently neutral and we are creating with our own vibration and the choices we make and the people we surround ourselves by that whether it is a hostile or a friendly universe.

Welcome to the Coherence Code Podcast, where we explore how the mind and body work together so you can move from stress and inner conflict to clarity, calm, and alignment. My name is Lorne Brown. I’m a doctor of traditional Chinese medicine and a clinical hypnotherapist. And through my work, I’ve seen that healing happens when we remove what gets in the way and allow the body and the nervous system to do what they’re designed to do to heal. Welcome to the Coherence Code Podcast.
All right, we are back with Dr. Anna Yusim. Now, she was already on the Coherence Code Podcast. So in episode 150, which we had released on April 6th, 2026, Anna and I explored a question that hits a lot of high achievers. Why does success not translate into happiness? Today, we’ll continue that conversation, but I’m hoping we’re going to go a little bit deeper. We’re moving beyond the psychology of fulfillment into something bigger. This is part three of her book. I don’t know if you remember, Anna, when we met, because you got scheduled so quickly, I only got to the first two parts of your book, so I didn’t get to go beyond that, which to me is the best part for me I loved. And so part three is about synchronicity, consciousness, interconnectedness, and basically what actually it means to be part of something bigger beyond death.
So since for many people, the real shift doesn’t come from doing more, it comes from seeing differently. This is the idea I’m getting from your book, Fulfilled. Dr. Anna is back. So welcome back, Dr. Anna Yusim. She’s a psychiatrist, an executive coach, and author of Fulfilled. And today we’re going to explore what happens when you stop trying to control life and start aligning with it. Welcome back.
Anna Yusim
Thank you so much, Lorne. I’m so happy to be back with you.
Lorne Brown
I thought we would just continue for where we left off. So for those that haven’t listened already, go check out episode 150 and going along with your book. So please, I invite my listeners to get a copy of your book Fulfilled. We’re in part three now, and there’s a chapter on synchronicity. And in your book, you’re describing synchronicity as a meaningful coincidence, so something that isn’t random. And I was hoping you can unpack a little bit about synchronicity and even some of the stories in the book I thought were really helpful to learn from. So is synchronicity different than a coincidence? And how would you describe this from your experience?
Anna Yusim
Absolutely, Lorne. So synchronicity is a term coined by Swiss psychologist Carl Jung to define the interrelationship between two events that are connected in your mind, but where one does not cause the other. So they’re acausal. Meaning, for instance, you have a thought about somebody and then you bump into that person on the street, or you have a dream about someone you haven’t heard from in ages and that person called you the next day. One did not necessarily cause or the other, and yet the fact that they occurred temporally in close succession made it meaningful in your mind. You create the meaning in your mind and the association in your mind. That is the synchronicity. Two things that happen together and to you, they are meaningful. That is what makes it a so-called meaningful coincidence. Now you can say these things happen all the time and they’re random, and of course we’re going to have these kinds of things.
Absolutely. And if in your mind they are random and that there isn’t anything meaningful, then absolutely. What makes it a synchronicity is what happens in your mind, not the occurrence of these events. So it’s a very interesting thing. For a lot of people, the presence of synchronicity is their way of an outward connection to divinity, an outward connection to something greater than themselves. God winking at them saying, go in this direction or don’t go in this direction. It’s a sign for many. And I often say that synchronicities are the external way of God or the universe speaking to you, whereas your intuition is the internal way in which God or the universe can speak to you.
Lorne Brown
So let’s unpack this a little bit more because what I got for the first time to really understand it at this level about synchronicity, because I’ve asked for signs and I’ve seen synchronicities and I’ve been willing, or I know you have to be aligned to be able to see these synchronicities and be open to these opportunities. But the thing that really landed was it’s individual. That was the part. Things are happening all the time, but it’s because you were able to give it meaning. So it’s not just that these two random events happened, but you also unconsciously immediately started to give it meaning, correct? So it’s an individual experience for this synchronicity to have meaning.
Anna Yusim
Absolutely. And we all have things like that. We’re like, why did that happen? Was that totally random or was that somehow meaningful in a different way? And we all have things which kind of make us question and make us raise an eyebrow and think that maybe this isn’t that random. And the more that you recognize synchronicities in your life, the more that you start to live a divinely inspired life with guidance when you’re asking for signs and guidance, the more you have these things occur. Now, to be very clear, in order to be able to have a good relationship to synchronicity and guidance in this way, you have to have a really good relationship to reality per se, to consensus reality. Meaning that if you are somebody who is psychotic, who has schizophrenia, who has those sorts of issues, then every single radio station is going to be speaking to you.
Every song is going to be about you. Suddenly you, this is what they call ideas of reference. Suddenly everything’s about you and nothing is a sign. And this means that the FBI is after you, and this means that you did something bad. So there’s ways in which this can be utilized also to create a downward spiral into psychosis. We do not want that. You need your feet firmly planted on the ground and to be grounded in reality in order to be truly able to appreciate synchronicity when it does occur.
Lorne Brown
Again, my belief or my current thought process around signs and synchronicity, and this ties into what you just shared about being grounded, because there’s a balance between grounded getting signs and then as you said, maybe mental health issues where you’re in some form of psychosis. Do you find though there are some people that my judgment is they’re not grounded where they don’t do anything without a sign. They’re asking every five minutes, should I have this coffee? Should I do this? Sign, sign, sign. To me, that is not grounded. To me, you go into this like it’s a big decision and you’re looking for some guidance. You’re not giving away your free will and your own agency and asking for everything to be provided as guidance or a sign. That’s my opinion. I go into this little gold bucket when I really, I think it’s a big decision, I want a little bit of help, but I’m not doing it on a daily basis, for example.
It doesn’t mean I don’t notice these synchronicities on a daily basis, but I’m not asking for signs or guidance on a daily basis.
Anna Yusim
Yeah, exactly. It’s such an important and an interesting point because you’re exactly right. We as human beings, especially for spiritual, especially if we want divine guidance, we want to live a God-inspired life. We want to live in accordance with flow, et cetera. We feel as though there’s always a right answer, and perhaps somebody else knows that answer better than us. For instance, the divine or the tarot card reader or our tarot cards on our phone or whoever it is, the psychic across the street. We pay a little bit of money, we give away our free will, and that person gives us the answer to what we should do with our free will in our life. That is a very, very dangerous thing. And actually, I have had in my practice and among colleagues and friends that I’ve known, people who have a so-called addiction to psychics or addiction to this external validation for what they should do.
And actually what that boils down to at the deepest level is an addiction to control and a deep discomfort with uncertainty. And we all in this world, we live in a world of uncertainty. There is a veil, I believe, between ourselves and the highest truth, and we’re doing our best to see that and to connect to that and to make our best choices. And sometimes we have more certainty and clarity as to what that is, sometimes less, but we can’t give away our free will and we have to make the best choices we can. And rather than outsourcing our free will, the most important thing is to do our best with our capacities and sovereignty in order to make the best choice possible and then give it 110%. And if that’s the wrong choice, then later on you change course.
Lorne Brown
I find stories help anchor this as well. And I was wondering, I mean, there’s multiple in your books, and I’ll share some too if you’re interested. Curious if you’re like, “That’s a synchronicity.” But in your book, the professional skeptic with the radio, if you remember the story where if you could share that. Michael Shermer
Anna Yusim
Of course.
Lorne Brown
And you had your own personal, how you came from Moscow to the States, just so people can get sometimes, “Oh, that’s what you mean by synchronicity.” So can you share a bit of that?
Anna Yusim
Absolutely. I’ll share both of these stories. So the first one that you’re talking about, the professional skeptic is Dr. Michael Shermer, who has made a career out of debunking claims of synchronicities and mysticism and spirituality where none exist, or he tries to understand what’s at the root of it. But he himself has had some very interesting experiences. And on his wedding day, he started to hear a radio from somewhere. And he and his fiance found that that radio was coming from a drawer, and it was an old, old transistor radio that was owned by, I believe it was the grandfather of his soon-to-be bride. And that grandfather had passed away. And I think earlier that day, that bride had expressed how much she would have loved for her grandfather to have been there to walk her down the aisle or to be there on her special day.
And then shortly thereafter, his transistor radio goes off, which by the way, was the only time that transistor radio had ever gone off on its own. And to them, that was a very, very meaningful synchronicity. That’s one.
Lorne Brown
And I want to highlight, that’s why it was meaningful. All right, so let’s hear story number two
Anna Yusim
Story number two was what from my book you said with my own family. So we were allowed to leave Russia in 1982 as part of the Zionist movement where they were letting Jews come to Israel. And we were not allowed to leave for a very long time. And it was very difficult and incredibly stressful for my parents. They would describe it as the most stressful time in their life. And my father’s mother had already passed away. Actually, before I was born, I’d never met her. And my grandfather and my father went once to her grave and my grandfather said, her name was Bronia, my father, Lenny needs to leave America. Can you please help him out from the other side? Allow them to leave. And it had already been, by the way, years. It’s been years. We have not been allowed to leave.
That happened. The next day we get a notice and we were finally allowed to leave Russia. Now, was that completely random or was that somehow meaningful that someone on the other side from our family interceded to enable my parents to immigrate? So for my dad, it was very meaningful. My dad is a skeptic just like Michael Shermer. He’s a physicist, very, very rational. So this was not something that he took lightly.
Lorne Brown
All right. I’d like to share one or two with you just for our listeners as well, because this was where a fertility patient, in her scenario, multiple canceled IVF cycles. We were talking about maybe not pursuing her next IVF and continuing to try naturally for a little bit because she had conceived naturally, but miscarried where IVF never gets to a retrieval, gets canceled with a low response. And she wasn’t sure what to do. And I said, “Well, why don’t you ask for a sign this time?” We’ve been doing my energy psychology. So she was really working on clearing out the noise, the resistance, filling the line. So she was in a good place, but she needed some guidance. And I said, “Would you be comfortable asking for a clear sign?” So she decided that her clear sign was pink flamingo. If I see a pink flamingo – I love it.
I will try naturally and not do the IVF. She was scheduled to do an IVF next month. I thought maybe she’d see one in a hotel or something, but I said, “All right, that’s your sign. I don’t judge the sign. Don’t forget, we’re in Vancouver. I don’t think you see too many pink flamingos running around, but that doesn’t mean you won’t see a postcard. If I recall correctly, her neighbor had a birthday and they put 50 pink flamingos on their yard. So when she came out a few days later outside, she turned and there’s all these pink flamingos. And so that was her sign. So to me, skeptic, whatever, that’s a hard one to say. And she came back saying, Should I still do the IVF or not? And I was like, if you ask the universe for a sign, and to me that’s a clear sign and you don’t listen, I would say that’s not a good thing to do to the universe.
You want to get good at this? Then listening to the signs means you get more and more signs. If you don’t listen, then why would I ever give you another sign? So it’s up to you. However, when you ask for a sign and it gives it to you, I would listen to it. Here’s one that is happening right now. And so I’m asking you if you consider this a synchronicity because I don’t know how this is going to turn out. It’s a two-parter here. So I have a patient working through her noise in her system and also wanting to conceive. In our session at the clinic outside the window was a hummingbird just humming around, and she sees it, and you can see it on her face. And thank God I didn’t say anything because when I saw the hummingbird and I saw her reaction, I see hummingbirds as a fertility sign.
We used to have hummingbirds all over our clinic. We don’t have them now, we used to have pictures. So when she saw it and she got excited, I thought she was making a connection because she was trying to get pregnant that it was a sign for her fertility. So she sees it, you can see it in her face, and she’s looking and I go, “You see that?” And she goes, “Yes.” And then she goes on to share that her mother-in-law who’s passed, who she’s very close to, she’s always communicating with her and she knows when she’s communicating because of a hummingbird. So her meaning had nothing to do with fertility. That was my meaning. And that’s what she shared because she’s going through a tough time. And the fact that her mother-in-law was with her gave her such comfort. Now, I’ve been in this clinic for 26 years.
I’m in that front of the window. That’s the first time there’s ever been a hummingbird at that window in 26 years. So there’s part of synchronicity. Here’s the added part where I’m telling you, I don’t know how this is going to unfold. Last night I dreamt in my dream, there’s a hummingbird in my bedroom around my blanket, freaking me out because it’s humming. It’s loud. And my cat’s freaking out. That was my dream. So when I woke up, I realized it was a dream. And the first thing that happened to me is I thought of that patient. And then I just sent her a message before we got on. I had a dream about a hummingbird. It made me think of you. I just wanted to check in. Is everything okay? And so I don’t know how this unfolds, but I just wanted to share with you, is that how you would interpret a little bit about meaning and also having a little courage.
I didn’t go ahead and say your mother-in-law saw me. I didn’t read into it. I just said, had a hummingbird in my dream. Thought of you and I wanted to check in. Is everything okay? I see her in my schedule tomorrow. However, if you want to talk today, I’ll make myself available. That was my message.
Anna Yusim
Yeah. I love that. I love that. That’s exactly how I think about it, Lorne. And moreover, it also illustrates another really important principle, and that’s the principle of inspired action. When we want to live a God-inspired life or a God-aligned life, then inspired action means taking action if and when you feel called in real time without any space between you and that action. And the fact that you woke up, you created that association, you texted your patient, that was inspired action. It’s really beautiful. And if you want to live that kind of life, then you take action only when it is inspired. You don’t take it out of obligation or because you have to or because you should or because you feel guilt. You take it because you are inspired to take that action. That is a god-aligned life. And so I love that you did that.
I love that you reached out to your patient. I’ve had many situations like that as well. And when I have synchronicities like that, I always text or email a patient as well to check in and make sure everything’s okay or we haven’t talked in a while. How’s everything? Yeah, so we’re very aligned in that.
Lorne Brown
And is there an underlying assumption then? Where are you getting the guidance from? What’s your understanding then that we’re getting guidance from, and is this guidance friendly then?
Anna Yusim
That’s a really great question. Is there something higher? Do we live in a friendly universe? This is what Einstein said, that at the end of the day, we have a choice. We can choose whether we live in a hostile or friendly universe, and we have to decide that. I think that whether we live in a hostile and friendly universe is a function of our own vibration and what we put out into the world. So I think that ultimately the universe is inherently neutral, and we are creating with our own vibration and the choices we make and the people we surround ourselves by, whether it is a hostile or a friendly universe.
Lorne Brown
Very. And then for people looking for synchronicity, are there a few things that you could share that kind of increases your synchronicity? One I always think of is just if you have noise in the system, right? Blowing resistance, being open, but what are some of the things that you would suggest could help increase your synchronicity?
Anna Yusim
Yeah, I love what you’re talking about with reducing noise in the system because the noise in the system will lead you to dismiss or do away with synchronicities. Oh, this is just a random coincidence. Or that you might even miss a synchronicity because at the end of. Okay, so the way that I see it, and I said this at the very beginning of the podcast, is that if we want to be guided in some way, we could be guided internally. And internal guidance is through intuition. And intuition comes to us through many different forms. Clairaudience, clairvoyance, clairsentience, claircognizance. We can talk about all those. I think we might’ve talked about it.
Lorne Brown
That’s episode 150, everybody. We talked about it.
Anna Yusim
Exactly. We talked about that. Yeah. So that is through intuition. You can get intuitive hits. And in order to get clear, intuitive hits, we have to quiet the static and the noise. The noise comes from our mind and our reason, or it comes from our emotions, which are often considered to be part of the body. So if you can quiet those loud voices, the still voice of intuition can come to the forefront. And it’s the same with synchronicity. With synchronicity, the key is discernment. And within a lot of the Christian Catholic literature, there are books and books and books and people who’ve devoted their lives to the study of discernment. How do you discern messages from the universe or messages from God? It’s a very nuanced and difficult topic, but it also comes with having clarity of intention and clarity of mission and purpose oftentimes.
And it’s like you said, that you ask this person to think of what would be a clear sign for you. It would be a pink flamingo. And lo and behold, she saw a pink flamingo. So you can ask for signs, you can ask for clear, concrete signs. You could indicate what a sign for you would be, and you can let the universe know what it is that you want from life and what it is that you’re struggling with, and ask for some guidance as to how to get to the other side. You might see your pink flamingo, but you might also be guided to the right book, the right person, someone who’s already overcome what you’ve overcome, and they give you hope, inspiration, and joy.
Lorne Brown
And those signs, thank you for sharing that. And so getting those signs like the pink flamingo, twice in my. I have had multiple times, but I don’t go to that for the sign part very often. But it was part of how did I go from chartered accountant, CPA to Chinese medicine as a doctor? That also was a very clear sign. And there’s that cognizant disconnect a bit because it happened. So here I am, I got to believe in it, but then there’s that left brain saying, “This does not make sense.” And that probably people have that. The skeptic or the doubt will come in there sometimes when you’re having these what seem random, but I guess you would say they’re not random synchronicities.
Anna Yusim
Absolutely. Yes. So it’s really a matter of discernment. Are these random things coming into your mind and heart and life or is this actual guidance? And it’s really based on you, how you interpret that and the meaning that you make of it and where you are in your life and the context that you interpret it all from. So it’s a very, very interesting idea and it stems from discernment and how you see the world, ultimately your cultural worldview and where you fit into it.
Lorne Brown
And going back to being grounded, the other part that when I was reading your book for this synchronicity alignment, we talked about dropping the noise, and your book discusses this in detail. This is my approach that I call notice, accept, choose again, how to bring down the resistance. Basically, you can’t force it. You can’t control it. And so part of this work is learning to surrender or let go and not be attached to outcome. How do you work with the high achievers who are used to controlling the outcomes that are listening to this now? I got to make a sign, and they’re asking for that sign or trying to find that synchronicity.
Anna Yusim
That’s the hardest thing. And especially for, because I work with a lot of fertility patients too, especially for fertility. And fertility is like cancer. People are so attached and so scared, and it’s a life or death matter oftentimes. And so for people to have their desired outcome, to make it clear what that is and to pursue it, to pursue it full force and with passion, but also not to obsess about it, not to be attached to it, not to have ruminative thoughts, not to have OCD, not to have anything that’s going to lead you to not feel free in your life to move forward. Your sovereignty and your freedom is at the end of the day, the most important thing. And I think within Catholic literature, when people have obsessive attachment to something, then what happens? One of the ways that that’s cleared is a dark night of the soul.
That’s sometimes one of the only ways that that’s cleared. And so if you can clear your own attachment to these sorts of things, you don’t need the dark night of the soul. You can just receive.
Lorne Brown
And that overattachment creates incoherence noise. And when you’re not attached, you go into coherence or alignment and resistance drops. So it’s paradoxical, right? It’s paradoxical in the sense that when you finally no longer need the outcome is when often it shows up.
Anna Yusim
Precisely, precisely. Which is really, really hard to do for overachievers. And sometimes, especially for people who are used to manifesting things on command and are very deliberate and intentional in what they do, working too hard to create something actually blocks it. So it’s a very difficult realization and it’s very difficult whether it’s your soulmate or your baby or a job or let go, let go and let it come in.
Lorne Brown
Yeah. So it’s a practice. You can’t think your way through this. It’s a practice. And that’s why I like your book. And again, Plug for Anna’s book, Fulfilled has exercises after each chapter that’s putting you through the practice of letting go. Or what I call in my practice, what I do in clinic is to bring down the noise, lower the resistance, so you become aligned. Hence, our podcast is called the Coherence Code Podcast. I want to go on to chapter 10 of your book. And we may go in between all these chapters, but you talk about consciousness. I’m not going to ask you to fully define it because I don’t think anybody knows what it really is yet, but that word is being used a lot. Dean Radin on our podcast, we had a really cool conversation about that. I would love for you to share this paradigm shift of consciousness, and I’m going to set it up.
There’s a materialistic model. Brain creates consciousness, the Newtonian model.
We’re observing everything. And then there’s the expanded model or quantum physics that conscious may exist beyond the brain and the brain could be a filter. Can you share, what do you subscribe to and what is science sharing with us? I think in this chapter, I heard Dean Radin talk about this and others before, and I think you talked about the double split experiment as well, waves and particles. So can we get a short overview of consciousness? And again, for our listeners, there’s a whole chapter on it, so we’re not going to do the whole chapter, but I would like to get a little bit of, because it’s thrown around a lot, consciousness, conscious talks, conscious work. I call my energy psychology often conscious work. And so please take it away, Anna.
Anna Yusim
Yeah, definitely. I think that the dichotomy is whether consciousness is actually created from the brain, and consciousness is anything that we do as human beings that we believe comes from the mind. It could be our emotions, our thoughts, our laughter, our even spiritual experiences. So does the brain create all that? Or is that actually perhaps from somewhere else? And what the brain does is it filters those experiences so that we can experience them in the three-dimensional world, and that this actually comes from something much greater in many more dimensions, but this brain enables the three-dimensional manifestation of all of these facets or epiphenomena of consciousness.
Lorne Brown
And so the paradigm where I think it’s shifting is we see the world, probably a small percentage of what we experience is the true reality. So we experience the world through touch, our senses, sight, smell. Is there this understanding that there’s more of this reality than we’re actually experiencing?
Anna Yusim
Yeah, I mean, absolutely. This reminds me of when I started to encounter these ideas for the first time, and I was towards the end of my residency training at NYU, and I had learned the medical model, the Western medical model of the mind, which essentially is that everything that is real can be felt with our hands, seen with our eyes, is empirical, can be subjected to double-blind placebo-controlled trials and reproduced through scientific experimentation. That’s reality. And then I came across Kabbalah, where I started studying Kabbalah at the Kabbalah Center, and it was a completely different principle. It was that only 1% of true reality can be seen with our eyes and touched with our hands. 99% of reality is unseen and unheard. It exists in a different dimension. And I was like, “Wow, very interesting. Completely different paradigm.” And so this is the idea of why something like the science of spirituality is a paradox, because science can be subjected to this experimentation and empiricism.
Spirituality is often subjective, transcendent, difficult to reproduce, certainly difficult to study through double-blind placebo controlled trials. So which is it? What is reality? How do you subject spirituality to scientific inquiry?
Lorne Brown
And it’s interesting because we’re trying to use a model that we’re suggesting that is incomplete to understand the infinite. We’re trying to use something finite to understand the infinite, which is probably why in Taoism, the Qing, they talk about the Dao that can be described cannot be the Dao because you’re able to describe it. And other traditions say this. And so this kind of falls in line with the brain is a filter idea. We’re filtering something that’s infinite into something that’s manageable in this human experience, but it can’t comprehend the vastness of what really exists. But it’s funny because we’re trying to make that vastness fit our model, which is a finite model so it doesn’t work to understand the vastness.
Anna Yusim
That’s exactly right. That’s exactly right. We’re trying to reconcile all the different ways of being and seeing reality because here we are sharing this reality, but how do we describe it? You ask 20 people from 20 different standpoints and traditions, and you’ll get maybe five or six different explanations. So you’re exactly right.
Lorne Brown
I heard a teacher of conscious, I don’t remember who said it, but the example will hit for our readers. Let’s say true reality is white snow, a big pile of white snow. And we see the world, we perceive the world through the lens of our subconscious. We have a perception, belief, and that’s how we experience perceive it. So if you have red glasses, you’ll see it differently. I have yellow, this person has blue, another person has orange, another person has green glasses. Everybody’s looking at the reality of white snow, but because we all have different colored lenses, Everybody’s experience of that white snow is going to be different. And through the work we do, we keep changing the lens so we have a new experience and eventually maybe the glasses are removed and you return back to source and now you see what reality really is.
Anna Yusim
Absolutely. Absolutely. Exactly. And it’s the veil. And when is the veil lifted? People say that there’s a veil between ultimate reality and what we have in this world, and that that veil is in part because of our brain, which filters out a lot of consciousness so that we can understand it in this world. And then some people have, for instance, a psychedelic experience and the veil is lifted and they’re like, oh, so this is reality. So how do I live within this reality? Or they have that through breath work or meditation. They’re able to see clearly without the veil. They’re able to see truly what is and get a different glimpse as to what reality is. How do we live? Is it compatible to live that way or is it possible to live that way? And how do you do so? And what is the consequence of living in that way?
And what’s the consequence of living knowing there’s a veil? So these I think are all the big questions that a lot of people struggle with.
Lorne Brown
We’ll have to get online and talk about this veil. I think I’ve once been there. You want to go on the other side of the veil? You don’t want to be in the veil. I did a psychedelic experience and got in the veil, and that’s like a purification process. You want to talk about dark night of the shadow and burning off karma? Mostly you don’t want to be in the veil. You don’t want to get stuck in the veil. We’ll talk about this later off camera, but you mentioned the veil a couple of times and I’ve had that experience which wasn’t a good experience. Back to consciousness. So in consciousness, I got a quote here for your books. I want to talk a little bit more about this energy and consciousness because I want to bring a little bit of this science to it. So in your book, cells and DNA communicate not only physically through particles, but also energetically through frequency and interference patterns through waves.
So this is this idea of how I understand it, that everything already exists. And you talk a little bit about the MC squared formula, Einstein’s formula here. I think it’s Einstein’s formula, E equals MC squared, that everything’s just transforming to one and the other and everything’s either manifested or unmanifested. So waves, particles. So I’m adding this. So the brain is not the center of consciousness, but a filter allowing us to experience a limited aspect of consciousness here and now in the physical world. Just as there are light frequencies the human brain cannot see and sound frequencies the human brain cannot hear, there are also aspects of consciousness that the human brain cannot perceive. The question I have is cells and DNA communicate not only physically, but through particles, but also energetically through frequency and interference patterns through waves. So this is the first time I’ve read something like that.
So is that something the scientific community has observed and measured?
Anna Yusim
Yeah. Hal Puthoff at Stanford has done work on this, and I think that there’s more and more people looking at the way in which ultimately everything is frequency. That of course, energy and matter are one at the quantum level, but also when you get down to the human level, everything has an energetic resonance in frequency. And we talk about coherence. This is where it comes from. Coherence is a function of frequency. So absolutely, I think that that’s where a lot of this work and these ideas come from. They’re not as developed very much. They’re not as developed as they could be, and I think they will be so over time. And a year and a half ago, the Nobel Prize went to the study of quantum physics, and so that there was a lot of people who are starting to understand the importance of those discoveries and to legitimize certain principles within quantum physics that make a lot of these ideas very real and tangible to us.
Lorne Brown
Okay, thank you. Manifestation, this idea of this is tied to manifestation law of attraction. There’s this thing that I have observed that all of a sudden a movie comes out and then within six months, three movies of the same thing came out. Now it takes years to make a movie, so they didn’t just copy somebody else’s movie or books. I have a book in me and then a few books have passed my desk and I’m like, that’s my book. And my notice accept choose again process is something that I believe the way I knew it, it felt like it landed in me. I didn’t feel like I came out with it. It really felt like I received something. So can you tie into, are we receiving? Are we tapping into a field and receiving or are we creating stuff? Is it really us creating it?
Or does it depend on how you look at it, the perception?
Anna Yusim
Yeah, there are so many discoveries. Throughout history, some of the greatest discoveries have happened in this idea of multiple discovery essentially, that the same discovery was made in different parts of the world by different people at the same time. And you can think about that as very just rationally, the same people putting together existing information are going to come to the same idea at the same time because that’s what is bubbling up within our world and within the cultural construct, or that the same people are tapping into the same downloads at the same time. And I have a friend of mine who it’s very interesting, she and I get the same downloads all the time. She will call me and tell me something and I will have gotten the same idea in my head. And it seems like it’s a totally random thing, but it happens so often that it’s not just a though that we’re having, it’s like something is coming into our mind.
So yeah.
Lorne Brown
Yeah. I run Healthy Seminars and I’ve had two practitioners propose talks. One’s on the West Coast, one’s on the East Coast. They never met each other. It’s pretty advanced understanding of acupuncture through the peripheral nervous system and beyond. And their names are almost the same for their programs too. A word different. And I asked, do you guys know each other? Because I thought one was copying from the other. But they did not know each other and could not believe how similar the material was. So yeah, so I like that idea. You better do it, get the download, or somebody else will do it. I think that the book was called Stealing Fire. I think that was the book.
Anna Yusim
Yeah, by Jamie Wheal. Yeah.
Yeah, by Steve Kotler.
Lorne Brown
I think Burning Man, I think that’s where Steve Jobs and Richard Branson and all these billionaires went and did drugs and downloaded ideas. I think it was in that book he mentioned that. I can’t remember if that was the case. And there’s ways to do it without drugs, by the way. Again, how Anna works with you as a coach and through her book, you can also learn to download it and tap into that. In your book, you brought up something that reminded me of another study. So explain this. This tells me quantum that life is not linear. You talk about a study where people study for an exam after the exam and improve the results. Do you know what I’m talking about? Okay. Can you tell us what this study is? And then I’ll have, because I’m trying to figure out, how did they study this?
And then I got one that you may know of so we can bring them together. I think it was in one of Joe Dispenza’s books where he talks about the TB group, tuberculosis, where they brought healers in to focus healing on one of the groups. And then the group that got the healing had better results. But the cool part was the group, the study or the hospital people were from 50 years ago. Just the healers didn’t know it wasn’t present time that these people are already dead. But when they looked at the data, the people that got the healing, they’re the ones that had the healing, not the people that didn’t. I don’t know if you know that study. So this goes beyond Newtonian linear. This goes into that idea of quantum that everything’s happening at once, there is no time. But for our audience sake, can you unpack the exam one first and maybe the TB one as well?
And then I may have some questions.
Anna Yusim
Absolutely. I’ll unpack the one with the exam. It’s super, super interesting that this is how people could work. But there is a number of studies that basically show that you have two groups of people, all of whom take an exam for which nobody studies beforehand. And then you have half of the people, one of the groups study afterwards for the test. Now, who does better on the exam? What do you think?
Lorne Brown
Well, based on what we talked about, the people who study afterward I think would do better. But before I would say it’d be random wouldn’t make a difference.
Anna Yusim
Exactly. You would think that that would be the case, right? That’s what all of us would think, because we think that time moves linearly forward. And if you study before an exam, then you’ll be able to take that knowledge with you linearly forward into the exam and do better on the exam. Apparently that’s not fully the case. There is a Cornell social psychologist, Daryl Bem, who actually has done the study over and over and over. And the results are controversial, but it’s pretty clear that this is a reality, that you have half the people study for the exam after the fact. And those people who study after always do better on the preceding exam. Strange, right? And the way that he explains it is that time doesn’t just move linear forward. Time also moves backwards. And you’re able to tap into your future self, especially your future self that’s right at the end of your exam in order to get knowledge from that future self.
I have to say in my own experience, I experience this all the time. My patients, for instance, will say to me, and I’ve had this over and over for years, “I made an appointment with you and right after that I started to feel better. And it’s very interesting. Is it because that they knew that I was going to help, that they were going to get help, et cetera?” I think that it’s that retrocausation that their future self already is tapped into the future and that we’re able to move that backwards a little bit. And I’ve certainly had that. If I had made an appointment with somebody, I know that something’s going to really help me if after I make an appointment, I start to feel better immediately. So time doesn’t just move forward, it moves forward and backwards. And this really challenges our conception of how time moves.
And there’s many different ways to interpret that, but this is certainly one of them. And there’s a lot that has been written about this. So Daryl Bem has essentially done tons of studies and it’s gone on for many, many years all over the world. And so appalled and fascinated by these results, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the AAAS sponsored several conferences for physicists and researchers to figure out what’s really going on. And at the end of all this, they declared, “It seems untenable to assert that time reverse causation or retrocausation cannot occur, even though it temporarily runs counter to the macroscopic arrow of time.” So the AAAS officially declared that time can move backwards. So why didn’t anybody tell us earlier? There’s a few things maybe we would’ve wanted to alter a little bit.
Lorne Brown
And did you know, you may not know, but in that study, had they already gotten their results or they wrote the exam and then late after the exam they studied and then they found out their results and those that studied after the exam had better results?
Anna Yusim
That’s a great question. That’s a great question. Right. Did it matter if you scored the exam right after or if you scored it? That’s a great question. I bet you, because it’s been done in so many different countries. I bet you that parameter has been tested for. I don’t actually know the answer to that, but it’s a great question.
Lorne Brown
And that TB study, the one that I shared, and I’ve never really looked it up, so somebody can fact check it. But in the TB study, these people had already, I think, it’d been so many years, they may even pass. That hospital doesn’t even exist anymore, for example, I believe. But the healers, when they prayed or did healing for the population sample that had TB versus the ones that were the control TB that didn’t get healed, when they opened up the data, the ones that got healed when they looked retrospectively, that group is the one that had the recovery, did better at the hospital than the ones that didn’t get prayed for. So that was a cool phenomenon. As you said, time seems to be an illusion. Okay. This weird stuff, but this is showing you that the Newtonian world is just not a complete science.
It works in this world. It’s like we believe the world is round, not flat, but you and I could take out a map that’s flat and it will work for us to drive and do things even though the world is round, not flat. So you can use things that are incomplete and make it work in this 3D world. It’s just incomplete. And now we’re bringing in the quantum aspect. And if you use both of them in the world, I think what we’re suggesting is you can experience peace and joy in your life when you bring them both together. Interconnectedness. Interconnectedness. So the illusion of separation. So you write the feeling of separation is in many way an illusion, first of all. And that many people, let’s think of the high performing women that I get to see, you may be one of those women, used to, can feel deeply alone even in relationships.
They can feel alone. So why does this disconnect feel so real, if you have any comments on that? And do you know what changes even emotionally, psychological, or I should say physiologically, emotionally and physicologically when somebody truly experiences that connection?
Anna Yusim
It’s such a great question. This is one of those principles that changing from this idea that you are alone, that you’re actually interconnected to everybody in everything, that changes your whole life. And why can people feel that they are all alone? Because they feel like they’re trying to do everything on their own and they feel disconnected from source, disconnected from guidance, disconnected from everybody else, in part because they have learned to be so self-sufficient and that self-sufficiency has been a marker of their strength, fortitude, and success in life. And they’ve been able to accomplish so much by virtue of doing that. And then finally they reach something that’s not the case and they can’t do it. And that self-sufficiency is no longer helpful. It’s actually a hindrance. And they have to learn a different way to be and to manifest. I often tell my patients that there’s two ways that you can manifest something, the more masculine way and the more feminine way.
So to also be clear, we’re all masculine and feminine. We are all within that binary structure. So everybody
Lorne Brown
Use Yin and yang because then it has less about –
Anna Yusim
Yin and yang, exactly. Exactly.
Lorne Brown
Yeah.
Anna Yusim
Absolutely. So the more yang masculine way is deliberate intent. So you set an intention, you work really hard, you make it happen. I’m going to make this happen. Self-sufficiency, amazing. The yin way is actually the opposite. It’s not about doing, it’s about being. It’s I am going to occupy the frequency that is the highest frequency I can occupy, which is the frequency of peace and joy. And I’m going to set an intention. And in setting an intention and in being at the best frequency I can, I’m going to magnetize in the highest level destiny for myself. Completely different. It sounds similar, but completely different. So the yin way of manifesting, the yin way of manifesting. And when you are more yang, you feel more alone. When you are more yin, you can feel more interconnected with everybody and everything because you realize what you’re creating in this world is a function of your own vibration and your own sense of being.
Lorne Brown
Because we’re using the word yin and yang, when you look at the yin yang symbol, they’re interdependent. And so when you talk about yin versus yang, I will add to this that right action follows right thinking. And so first get into that state of beingness, presence, yin. And then from that place, yong, take action. Because let’s say we clone you, Anna. You can have one Anna that is coming from fear and lack, that’s her beingness, and another Anna that’s coming from feeling whole and complete. And they both do the same action, the same yang activity, but their yin-ness is different. They will get different results. Even though they’re clones, even though they’re doing the same action, but they’re yin, their beingness is different. So to me, they’re both. You got to get into that state of alignment, beingness, which is what you’re sharing. And then inspired action follows the inspired beingness.
That’s how I look. So to me, it’s not yin or yang. They’re interdependent. However you want right action to follow right thinking or right beingness.
Anna Yusim
I love that. I love that. That’s exactly what we talked about with inspired action. That’s exactly right. And this is also the stoics. It’s about the best level of being and the best level of action from that being. And you’re exactly right, that if that being comes first, and if the being is the most elevated soul-inspired way of being where you are aligned with love and courage and perseverance in the best version of yourself from a soul level and not from the more ego-based manifestation of fear and anger and hatred and jealousy and control and all, which are by the way, totally normal human things, which we all have. The more that we’re able to be aligned in our being with the former rather than the latter, and then take our action from there, the more we’re able to be in flow with life. And then to feel interconnected with everybody and everything and feel less alone in this world and more interconnected with everything that is.
Lorne Brown
So when it comes to interconnectedness, I’m curious if you’ve ever heard this, and it just landed my mind, so I’m going to speak it. I’ve heard that cancer cells, that when they lose their connection to the body, that’s when they go to control and divide. And that what we need to do is bring these cells back into alignment, into connectedness with the body, and then they’ll stop behaving like cancer. Have you heard of this? Because I wish I had more. It’s something I’ve skimmed, but the whole concept was when it feels separate, when a cell goes separate and goes rogue, we get cancer. But as long as it’s connected to the system, it won’t happen.
Anna Yusim
100%. I think that that is a beautiful analogy, and I think that there is elements within which that is true, very true. And I think that that has a biological antecedent and that the metaphor that you’re using is very, very accurate. Absolutely. And I think that cancer, as the majority of chronic and devastating illnesses, degenerative illnesses, happen from a constellation of processes that go awry at the biological, psychological, spiritual, and social level. And it’s up to us to understand what those are and to do our best to correct them. And absolutely for the cancer cell to feel alone and to feel disconnected from the system and therefore go rogue and start to reproduce without any sort of safeguards. Yes, very much so.
Lorne Brown
So going with this interconnectedness, one last thing on this, and then if we have time, we’ll go to that last chapter of your book. I often look at, right now, people will say the world looks like a shit show, right? And I often say the external world I subscribe to, because I didn’t start saying this. I subscribe to the external world is a reflection of our inner world. So the fact that I’m seeing the world as it is, it lets me know that there’s something going on inside of me and that it comes back to if we’re inconnected, I have to go and do my work. And when I heal, the whole world will benefit, not just me because we’re all interconnected. I don’t know if I’m explaining this correctly, but the question I have is if you subscribe to this idea as well that if we’re all interconnected and we’re noticing the world isn’t in a great place, rather than trying to go out and change the world so much as go in first and do your healing, get into that yin place before you take the yang action.
So go in and heal. And when you go in and heal, because we’re all connected, when you do your own healing, when you do your own work, then the external world will all benefit because we’re all connected. Basically, we’re in the pool together, don’t piss and shit in the pool because we’re all in it together, right?
Anna Yusim
Absolutely. I think that I completely agree with that. And that’s the thing that the more that you could recognize that you are part of a system and also take a responsibility for all the other elements of that system, the more that you’re able to, as your own being within the system, be successful and align. Because if we are part of the system, but we are taking advantage and thinking that it’s all about us, life gets lonely. We don’t get the consequences that we want. Sometimes maybe we do for a while, but at the end, something goes a little bit wrong. So I think that you’re exactly right, that it’s really about us seeing the interconnectedness and making choices, not just for ourselves, but for the group as a whole and being able to have in real life, the empathy and compassion for the others going through similar things and the others who are also experiencing similar challenging, similar positive things, to see our life as more than just our life, that it’s much, much bigger.
Lorne Brown
Thank you. Last chapter, and we’re going to keep it because of time, short, but impactful. So on immortality, there’s this idea that you talk about death anxiety. I’m sure a lot of people have this death anxiety. And the person who wrote the foreword to your book is Dr. Eben Alexander who talks about near-death experiences. And there’s this idea that energy equals mc squared, so nothing is ever gone. It just changes into other forms. What can you impart from you knowing Eben Alexander, your research or your knowledge around near death experiences? What has the scientific community started to understand about what happens when this physical body dies, even talking to other loved ones to give people a little bit of peace around death anxiety?
Anna Yusim
Yeah, absolutely. And there’s so much written on death anxiety. And I love the work of Eben Alexander. Proof of Heaven is such an amazing book, number one New York Times bestseller for several years in a row. This is a skeptic and a doubter who did not believe in anything like a near-death experience. And then he himself had E. coli meningitis, which essentially completely shut down his brain. And from that space, he had an experience unlike anything, it was hyper-real, unlike anything he’d experienced in the past where he connected to other individuals who had passed and got a new sense of his purpose or mission and was able to come back and have a full recovery. So the degree of meningitis and the brain shutdown that he experienced, there is no known cases of anybody recovering fully from something like that. And there’s medical record and medical documentation of many physicians of this.
So what he had was truly a medical miracle, but it was the high consciousness of the experience that he saw something on the other side. And as a Harvard neurosurgeon had the language and the experience to really share this with humanity in a way that nobody else could.
Lorne Brown
And he went on to do research, right, with other people near-death experiences.
Anna Yusim
Exactly, exactly. And he then has become a really important spokesperson about the nature of consciousness and whether the brain creates consciousness or whether the brain is essentially a filter for consciousness, a filter that enables us to experience conscious phenomena in the three-dimensional world, he would argue much more for the latter. Whereas a lot of the hardcore materialists and the way that our world is structured and that science is structured would see it more as the former, that the brain creates consciousness. So Dr. Alexander’s work is super powerful in this. And there’s a lot of individuals also who talk about death anxiety from an existential standpoint, like Dr. Irvin Yalom. He’s one of my favorite authors, an existential psychiatrist. And with respect to death anxiety, he writes that the people who least fear death are those that have the least unlived life within them. So the way that you overcome your death anxiety is really living life to the fullest.
And when you talk about when the bell tolls, which is really about your death, just know that the bell tolls for you. All of us are going to die. And the more things that you can do now to live fully today and not wait until you’re near death, or the less that you fear dying or you fear that you’re somehow going to have unlived life within you.
Lorne Brown
A small tangent, but on Healthy Seminars, Dr. Randine Lewis runs a Daoist death medicine mentorship that I get to moderate. So just for my colleagues that listen to this, you want to check that out because basically Anna, big part of the program is not only to become like these death doulas, but Daoist death doulas. But the work is that everybody is learning to have the ego kind of die or that part of them let go so they can start living today. In this chapter though, you discuss about people connecting with loved ones as well. And everything seems friendly. I don’t know if it was Eben that said this, but I’ve heard this before. If somebody asked somebody, I think it was Eben around near-death experiences saying it’s similar to when somebody does a psychedelic experience and they have this incredible, beautiful experience. And he said, and I’m not sure which doctor it was, but I’m assuming it was Eben, said, “No, they’re not the same because nobody’s ever had a negative, scary, near-death experience.
They’re only friendly positive where some people have had bad trips in psychedelics, so don’t call them the same.” So can you touch a little bit about people that have connected with loved ones where, again, it was kind of scientifically shown that the person who was getting the information from the loved one that’s on the other side couldn’t have known this information just to give people an idea that maybe missing loved ones, that usually they’re all okay and they do try to communicate. And if we have time, I’ll share a story of a patient that had that communication just recently.
Anna Yusim
Definitely, definitely. And I have many stories like that also of patients. And I actually am not as familiar with the literature on near-death experiences, and I don’t know if people have had negative ones. Usually what’s reported is much more positive experiences, so I think that that’s probably true. But there have been so many people who have in many different ways had experiences with people who’ve passed on. I have had that within my own office with patients, with things falling off my walls, with lights flickering as we’re talking about somebody who’s just passed. And I know that I’m not alone. There’s been so much written about this, and I’m sure you have your experiences as well. And what that to me suggests is that our physical body is part of reality, but our three-dimensional world is only a part of that. And as we die, as our body no longer moves on, there could be something transcendent like the soul that does continue and is able to communicate with us in some way, shape, or form.
And that there’s ways in which we can get messages and reassurance and love from the people that have passed down.
Lorne Brown
Anna, I want to thank you again for coming back onto the show. I’m reminding everybody, episode 150 that we released April 6th of 2026 is there available for you to listen to either on YouTube, Spotify, Apple, et cetera. So check out where we go through the first part of her book, part one and two. And Anna, where can people go to find more about your book, your coaching, your medical practice?
Anna Yusim
Thank you so much, Lorne. Yes, it’s a pleasure to be here with you again. That was a lot of fun as always. And my website is www.annayusim.com, which is A-N-N-A, Y as in yoga, U as in umbrella, S as in Sam, I, M as in Mary dot com.
Lorne Brown
Thank you very much for that. And remember, her book is called Fulfilled. Check that out. And if I would wrap this up a bit, what I’m hearing through all of our discussion is that the shift isn’t about becoming more. It’s about removing what’s in the way. So removing the noise, the conditioning, the constant doing. And when that quiets down, when the noise quiets, the resistance drops, what’s already there, the clarity, connection, intuition starts to come online. There’s the coherence. And maybe that’s what alignment really is. Not chasing, but allowing. So we’re not going to force outcomes, but become someone who can receive them. So I guess we’re getting to a place of becoming receptive is the goal, and that’s what I get from your book as well.
Anna Yusim
Absolutely. I think that that is what we are doing. We talked about the yin versus the yang. We are so good at the yang. The yin is much harder. The yin is the receptive way of being and way of manifesting, and it’s about receiving and being open to that. And the way that you become open is really getting out of the way. If we can get out of the way, things come in and we open our hearts and we receive and beautiful things happen.
Lorne Brown
Amen. All right, we’ll end on that note then. Thank you for spending this time with us on the Coherence Code Podcast. I’m Dr. Lorne Brown, and I will see you next week for another conversation on coherence and healing. If this conversation resonated with you, please like, subscribe, or follow the show, and also share it with someone who might benefit from it as well. Remember to take a moment to breathe, reflect, and stay connected. Welcome to the Coherence Code Podcast.
