Transforming Beliefs Through Neuroplasticity: The Power of the NAC Belief Change Practice

In our energy psychology belief change sessions, also known as Consious Work, we use the principles of neuroplasticity—our brain’s ability to reorganize itself by forming new neural connections. To illustrate this, I use the elastic band metaphor. If you stretch an elastic band and then release it, it returns to its original shape. This is similar to a mindset (shift) change, where we adjust a behaviour temporarily but don’t see a lasting effect.

However, if we sustain the stretch for a period of time, when we release the band, it doesn’t return to its original shape. It’s been reshaped—just as, through persistent practice, our brain can undergo structural changes that result in lasting transformation. This is the essence of neuroplasticity: the ability to move beyond short-term adjustments to create lasting, trait-level changes.  As Dr. Joe Dispenza, author of Breaking the Habit of Being Yourself, explains, our personality shapes our personal reality; we cannot bring our current personality into the future and expect a different outcome.  Hence a trait change is required which we do with belief change work.

To facilitate this transformation, Dr. Lorne Brown uses his present moment   practice called NAC (Notice, Accept, Choose Again). NAC involves three simple steps:

1. Notice: Pay attention to the thoughts, emotions, or patterns that arise. Recognizing these allows you to identify what needs to change.

2. Accept: Acknowledge what you’re experiencing without resistance or judgment. This is attention without tension.

3. Choose Again: The final step is to Choose Again. After you’ve noticed and accepted the emotion without resistance, you are now fully resourced to choose how you want to be and respond consciously. Then right action follows right thinking. Your action comes from your beingness.

NAC isn’t just about shifting behaviour temporarily; it’s about using neuroplasticity to rewire the brain at a deeper level, creating permanent and meaningful change. Through this method, clients can move beyond temporary fixes and achieve enduring transformation that shapes their life and well-being.

By using practice of NAC, you engage in a process that sustains the ‘elastic band’ stretch of your mind, ensuring that when change occurs, it’s lasting and deeply rooted in who you are consciously becoming.
