There’s a saying “it takes a village to raise a child.” In our case, it took a village to create a child. Well, maybe not a village but a team of dedicated medical professionals who’s one goal was to help us create our child.
I am 38 years old and am expecting my first child. I am writing this blog to all the older moms to tell you not to give up! My husband and I tried to have a baby for over two years. Due to my age, we headed to the fertility clinic for help after one year of trying on our own. Over the next year, we tried two IUI's and two failed IVF’s. The reason for our failed IVF’s was being called “Diminished Ovarian Reserve” (basically small amount of available eggs and concerns about egg quality).
My husband and I started trying to conceive when we got married six years ago. After a couple of years went by with no luck, we decided to go into our doctor’s office to see if there was a problem. The doctor couldn’t find anything wrong but suspected that damage from a surgery I had four years earlier to remove some pre-cancerous cells from my cervix might be a contributing factor. This meant that we needed to get help.
My entire life, I have always known that I wanted to have a family of my own. I have always loved being around children. When I got married, I was still really young. Even though I knew I wanted to have children, we didn't start trying to conceive for a few years since I wanted to "be ready" in all other aspects to start a family. Had I known all the struggles that we would go eventually through, we would have started trying to conceive as soon as we got married!
We would like to thank Trevor Erickson for his huge support during my time at Acubalance. My husband and I had been trying to have a baby for almost two years but were unsuccessful due to many miscarriages. I was told by a friend to pursue acupuncture as an option so I searched for the most specialized acupuncturist in fertility. I found Acubalance.
I began seeing Trevor in July 2009 after nearly three years of trying to have a baby. We went through four miscarriages - three miscarriages using Clomid and one miscarriage after two cycles of injectables. The stress of monthly doctor's visits, blood tests, temperature taking, etc. had me so depressed and really changed the person I was. Even worse, the introduction of all the hormone injections and coming off the pill after years of use caused my skin to break out in terrible cystic acne!
I first started seeing Ryan at Acubalance in January 2010. Since a teenager, I have always had irregular/infrequent cycles which my doctor attributed to hormonal imbalances and diagnosed as oligomenorrhoea. At the time, my husband and I were not trying to get pregnant. However, we knew that we would want to start trying to conceive sometime within the next year. My main purpose for receiving acupuncture was to attempt to regulate my period so that when the time came, we would have an easier time conceiving.
After losing our first son at 22 weeks, I was scared to get pregnant again. I didn't know how we would be able to get pregnant again and deal with the anxiety and fear of carrying another child. After hearing about Acubalance from a friend, I started to see Spence on a weekly basis to get a healthier mind, body, and spirit. His approach was amazing. The time he took to get to know me and understand what was going on physically and mentally made me feel very confident and supported. It wasn't very long before we became pregnant again.
After my first attempt at IVF failed due to poor egg quality and quantity, I asked my OBGYN what I could do before I started my second round to prepare my body and increase my fertility. He suggested that I try acupuncture and referred me to Dr. Brown’s clinic Acubalance. I had tried acupuncture previously at a different clinic for unrelated reasons and had an unpleasant and unsuccessful experience, so I was a little nervous going for my first treatment at Acubalance. Dr. Brown and his staff put me immediately at ease.
Canada Day weekend 2007 found me in bed crying for three days as I miscarried at 10 weeks. My husband lied next to me, holding me the whole time. I felt so crushed, so broken, like my body and my life was betraying me. I had to undergo a D&C at the hospital. We had gotten pregnant after about six months of trying; I was 37 at the time, my husband almost 48.
