Indulge Smartly: Tips for Mental, Emotional, and Physical Wellness During the Holidays

Staying Healthy Through the Holidays

If you’re anything like me, the holiday season can be the most challenging time to stick to your health plan. With shorter days, chilly weather, and festive gatherings brimming with holiday cheer (rum and eggnog, anyone?), maintaining balance can feel like an uphill battle. I love to indulge, but I also know how important it is to keep myself in check so I don’t overdo it.

To help you stay close to peak health during this busy time, I’m sharing a few simple ideas that focus on all aspects of wellness—mental, emotional, and physical health.

Mental Health: Pause and Reflect

The holidays are a perfect time to step back, recharge, and focus on what truly matters. Schedule moments of relaxation to clear your mind and reduce stress. Some ideas include:

  • Take a hot bath (a note for men: avoid overly hot baths if fertility is a concern).
  • Practicing meditation or mindfulness.
  • Singing, spending time with friends, or taking a peaceful walk in the snow.

Emotional Health: Rediscover Joy

Mental and emotional health go hand in hand, and the holidays are a great time to reconnect with what makes you happy.

  • Reflect on activities that bring you joy—reading, baking, crafting, or spending time with loved ones—and make time for them.
  • Create a small list of your favorite things and prioritize them during the season.

Physical Health: Balance the Basics

Exercise
Even if the weather is cold, damp, or dark, try to get outside for fresh air. The outdoors has unmatched health benefits. Try snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, or simply bundling up for a brisk walk. Aim for at least 20 minutes of movement daily.

Diet
Holiday treats are tempting, but they shouldn’t edge out the veggies!

  • Prioritize a full serving (or two) of vegetables at each meal. This helps you feel full and curbs the desire to overindulge in desserts.
  • Before heading to a social gathering, enjoy a hearty serving of veggies to minimize snacking on less-than-healthy options. Remember, it’s okay to indulge—just do so in moderation.

Rest
The long nights and cold days are nature’s invitation to rest. Take this time to recharge:

  • Sleep in a little longer when you can.
  • Avoid over-scheduling yourself.
  • Take breaks to relax and hibernate with your favorite book, show, or cozy activity.

The goal is to emerge from the holidays feeling refreshed and energized, not worn out.

Wishing you a holiday season filled with joy, relaxation, and good health. Enjoy your favorite traditions, indulge in the things you love, and have fun!
