Unlocking Fertility Naturally: How Acupuncture, LLLT, and Nourishing the Soil Can Boost Reproductive Health

By Dr. Lorne Brown, Dr.TCM, CPA, FABORM

In the world of fertility care, there’s a quiet revolution happening—one that blends time-honoured healing traditions with cutting-edge technology. I recently had the pleasure of joining Dr. Kela Smith on The Hormone Puzzle Podcast to dive deep into how acupuncture, low-level laser therapy (LLLT), and foundational lifestyle practices can improve fertility outcomes, including those navigating IVF, IUI, or trying to conceive naturally.

Let’s unpack some of the key takeaways from our conversation—and how you can harness these natural strategies on your fertility journey.

In Chinese medicine, there’s a guiding principle: “Nourish the soil before planting the seed.” It’s a metaphor we use often to describe how the body must be prepared and supported before conception can happen. Think of the egg or sperm as the plant—and your internal celluar environment as the soil.

If the soil is dry, inflamed, or full of weeds, even the healthiest seed will struggle. But when the environment is balanced—rich in nutrients, free of toxins, and supported by good circulation and rest—the body can express its full potential.

“Your body has the innate ability to heal. Our job is to remove what’s blocking it and provide what’s missing.”

This means addressing inflammation, oxidative stress, hormonal imbalances, and poor mitochondrial function—which can all disrupt fertility, particularly in cases of advanced maternal age, PCOS, endometriosis or diminished ovarian reserve.

LLLT, also known as photobiomodulation, uses red and infrared light to stimulate cellular activity. Unlike surgical lasers, LLLT is non-invasive and pain-free. It works by delivering light energy (photons) to the cells, boosting mitochondrial function and ATP production, while reducing inflammation and oxidative damage.

Why is this important for fertility?

Because mitochondria—the powerhouses of your cells—are crucial for the energy-demanding process of egg maturation, embryo development, and implantation. As we age, mitochondrial function declines. LLLT can help reverse that.

Research Highlights:

  • Improved implantation rates: Studies show that laser acupuncture increases implantation rates by up to 15% when used on IVF transfer day.
  • Enhanced egg and sperm quality: LLLT boosts mitochondrial activity and reduces oxidative stress in reproductive cells.
  • Better outcomes in IVF: Clinics using LLLT report higher blastocyst development and pregnancy rates—even in women over 40 or with multiple failed IVF cycles.

“It’s like adding sunlight. You’re rejuvenating & energizing the cells.”

At Acubalance Wellness Centre, we combine acupuncture with LLLT for a synergistic effect. Acupuncture regulates hormones, calms the nervous system, improves blood flow, and supports ovulation, while laser therapy enhances cellular function and reduces inflammation.

Together, they help:

  • Regulate cycles
  • Improve egg and sperm quality
  • Calm the immune system (especially helpful in autoimmune or inflammatory fertility issues)
  • Improve uterine lining and implantation
  • Reduce symptoms of PCOS, endometriosis, and premature ovarian aging

Before adding in advanced treatments like IVF along with LLLT/PBM, make sure your foundation is solid. Here’s what I recommend for nourishing your soil at home:

  1. Eat an anti-inflammatory, low glycemic diet. Download our free Acubalance Fertility Diet for recipes and guidance.
  2. Move your body. Gentle movement like walking, yoga, or tai chi boosts circulation and reduces cortisol.
  3. Prioritize rest and deep sleep. This is when the body repairs and regulates hormones.
  4. Cultivate emotional health. Address stress, inner critics, and limiting beliefs through mind-body practices like EFT or meditation.
  5. Find community. Connection is healing. Surround yourself with support.

While protocols vary, a typical approach might involve:

  • 2–3 laser sessions per week
  • Average duration: 3–6 cycles (ideally 100 days) to influence full follicular development
  • Sessions target mitochondrial health, blood flow, and inflammation
  • During the luteal phase (post-ovulation), laser is used more cautiously—avoiding the abdomen—to support implantation safely

And yes—you can still actively try to conceive during this time.

Whether you’re 32 or 42, navigating IUI or IVF, or just starting your fertility journey, know this: your body has the capacity to heal and conceive.

You just need to:

  • Remove what’s interfering
  • Add what’s missing
  • And trust in your body’s innate intelligence

Acupuncture, low-level laser therapy, herbs, and lifestyle medicine aren’t quick fixes—they’re powerful tools for creating a body that’s ready to conceive and thrive.
