Less Really Is More

I had an enlightening discussion with a fellow naturopathic physician the other day that got me thinking about the phrase less is more. She and I were out for a friendly chat over a glass of wine and (of course) the discussion turned to our practices and patients.

Understanding Endometriosis

Endometriosis (Endo) is a huge health problem around the world. This disease roughly affects 1 in 10 women; usually between the ages of 15 to 49, which is approximately 176 million women in the world.

Endometriosis is certainly something men don’t have to worry about but it is important to understand how it can negatively impact the quality of life of the female who is dealing with endo symptoms.

7 Ways To Naturally Care For Your Breasts

October is breast cancer awareness month – and as breast cancer is the most common cancer among Canadian women, with 26,300 women diagnosed in 2017, it’s important to consider that we’re all at risk. Rarely, breast cancer is also diagnosed in men – there were 230 new cases in Canada in 2017. Chances are you know and love someone who has, or has had, breast cancer. In honor of this, I’d like to share some strategies to proactively reduce your risk.

Sleep, Exercise and Hormones.

Sleep More

Sleep is SO important for your hormone function and bodily processes. When you get a proper amount of sleep (between 6 and 8 hours per night), your body is able to produce sufficient hormones (including DHEA) and neurochemicals.

Get the most Bang for your Oocyte Buck

Did you know that you can thank your mother for bestowing you with the number of eggs or oocytes you will carry for a lifetime?

Women at birth have around 400, 000 Oocytes (eggs) in their ovaries. Environmental and stress factors can decrease egg quality and quantity. So, you ask, “how do we get the most bang for our buck?” in other words how do we maximize egg quality to better the chances of conception?.

Acupuncture helps to boost female fertility and improve (oocyte) egg quality in three main ways:

Guide to Sugar #2: Sugar and your Hormones

It’s safe to say the docs here at Acubalance are pretty obsessed with hormones. The endocrine system (all of the glands in the body that produce hormones) is crucial for a plethora of functions in the body including metabolism, growth and development, fertility and sexual function, sleep, mood and emotions, respiration, digestion, and more. It’s no wonder we preach hormone balance as a crucial aspect of every one of our patient’s treatment plans. The hormonal system in the body requires delicate balance for these various actions to take place.

Case Study: "I just had the perfect period!"

Have you ever sat around with a group of other women and compared notes on your periods? Someone might say they get the craziest cravings while on their period. Another says that they can’t believe how much blood she can lose without passing out. The woman sitting next to you may say that she misses out on an entire day and a half because she can’t even muster the energy to get out of bed. The worst is when men dismiss our emotions because it’s that time of the month again. No, scratch that. The worst is when we dismiss our own emotions because “I’m just being hormonal again”.
