What You Can Do In Between Acupuncture Treatments To Boost Fertility

For a variety of reasons - financial constraints, schedule conflicts, or a worldwide pandemic that has shut everything down - some patients aren’t able to come in the once or twice weekly recommended dosage of acupuncture treatments. When Acubalance had to temporarily close down to do our part in stopping the spread of COVID-19, I got a flood of emails from my fertility patients asking what they can do in the meantime to help support their fertility. And this is what I told them:


CHINESE HERBS: I strongly recommend consistent herbal therapy if acupuncture isn’t able to be performed on a regular basis. I have some patients that only come in once a month or once a season and take daily herbs to keep their symptoms at bay in between sessions. DIET: Never underestimate the power of a healthy diet. Food is the original medicine for a reason. I tell all of my fertility patients to focus on three things: good quality protein, healthy fats, and as many vegetables as they can get in a day. If a caffeine or sugar addiction something you know you need to work on? Social isolation may be a perfect time to work on eliminating some habits you’ve been meaning to kick without distraction.

SUPPLEMENTS: To fill in the inevitable gaps in diet, supplements are truly key. One of my patients emailed me asking if she should even bother keeping up with supplements since there were a variety of factors preventing her from trying to conceive in the next few months. I explained to her that if she was going to try to conceive in the next year (and she was) then absolutely keep taking her supplements. I explained to her that it takes a whole year for the egg that you are ovulating in your current cycle to mature enough, although the last three months are the most important part. That means everything that she is or isn’t doing, including supplements, will affect the egg that she will be ovulating in a year, but especially in the next three months.

EXERCISE: Keeping up with movement while you’re stuck in your house can be difficult. Although the beauty of everyone being stuck indoors right now is all of the awesome content yoga teachers and fitness instructors are making available online. Be mindful if you are currently trying to conceive, however. Try a youtube workout, or an online dance class, or pilates class. You can even cycle sync your workouts - search for luteal phase (second half of your cycle), or follicular phase (first half of your cycle) yoga/workout.


STRESS REDUCTION: These times are undeniably stressful, but that’s the sign that you need to take your mindfulness practices to the next level. I recommend meditation to all of my fertility patients because studies show it can help. This is also a perfect time to begin a gratitude practice, start journaling, or reach out to family and friends for social support.
