Chinese Medicine Techniques for Lung Health and Immune System Support
Lots of people have heard of cupping (mostly due to celebrities and famous athletes displaying their small circular bruises), but not many people are aware of the benefits of gua sha, cupping’s sister therapy.
What is Gua Sha?
Gua Sha (Guasha) is a manual technique that uses a dull-edged object to gently scrape various areas of the body, typically the back and neck. It utilizes long or short downward strokes to stimulate microcirculation of the soft tissue to increase blood flow. The scraping breaks the surface capillaries on the skin causing petechiae to arise. So like cupping, gua sha also leaves a distinct pattern on the skin that fades within 3-5 days or so.
Benefits of Gua Sha
Gua Sha helps the body secrete anti-inflammatory cytokines, upregulate nitric oxide, inhibit the inflammatory actions of white blood cells, and reduce oxidative stress and chronic inflammation. This makes it wonderful not only for musculoskeletal pain but for immune system support and respiratory health. It stimulates the immune system through this activation of the connective tissue (which is attached to and subsequently affects organs like the lungs) to treat symptoms such as fever, coughing (acute and chronic), headaches, bronchitis, wheezing, muscle aches, and asthma.
Paired with acupuncture or a series of glutathione nebulizer treatments, guasha can be a great tool to get you one step closer to better respiratory health and a stronger immune system. Curious to see how guasha can help you with your health goals?
