Regulating Cycles and Getting Pregnant Naturally with PCOS
Since September is PCOS awareness month, I thought I would combine a success story with some information about one of my favourite supplements for people struggling with PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome).
Myo-inositol is a b-vitamin like substance that helps glucose enter your body’s cells in response to insulin. It is a supplement I recommend to nearly all of my patients with PCOS, regardless of their type of PCOS. Myo-inositol has been shown to improve ovulation rates, live birth rates, fasting insulin, insulin resistance, serum testosterone, and BMI. Because insulin resistance and unstable/high blood sugar is a common factor, many women are prescribed metformin, however, inositol powder has been shown to outperform metformin in studies.
A meta analysis with 935 patients with PCOS going through IVF found that inositol powder reduced the dosage of stimming medication by 14%, increased grade 1 embryos by 8%, decreased the miscarriage rate by 66%, and increased the clinical pregnancy rate by 21%. Another study found that myo-inositol can be considered a first-line treatment in the regulation of menstrual cycles.
Ashley, a 33 year old woman who was recently diagnosed with PCOS after discontinuing the birth control pill, came to our clinic to help regulate her cycle to try to conceive naturally. Her period was very infrequent after stopping the pill, with at least 4 months in between each cycle. We conducted a very thorough initial consultation. Her treatment plan included dietary and lifestyle modifications, blood work to look at thyroid health and vitamin d, key supplementation with supplements like myo-inositol, and weekly acupuncture.
She got her first period after 69 days, a huge improvement to the 4 months between her last period. We continued with weekly acupuncture and her next period arrived after 37 days. It was then much easier for her and her husband to calculate ovulation to time conception. Although we had to discontinue in person acupuncture due to COVID, Ashley continued her diet, supplement, and exercise routine and her next period came after 41 days. I checked in with her a month into quarantine and was pleased to hear that she was pregnant from her very next ovulation. In total, it took 4 months to regulate Ashely’s cycle and achieve pregnancy, which isn’t very long considering that was the length of time between her periods before she came to Acubalance.
