My Top 3 Supplements for Fertility

Every time I see a new patient I recommend a handful of supplements. I’ve been doing this routinely for so long now that I have stopped thinking about the “why”. And that’s what I like so much about new patients; they ask the questions that remind me to remember why I recommend things. Here’s the Cole’s notes on why I recommend coenzyme Q10, vitamin D3 and Fish oils.

CoQ10 is a vitamin-like substance found in every one of your cells. In fact, your body produces CoQ10. It is used primarily in the production of ATP, which provides the energy to run all the cellular processes of your body. Needless to say, this energy declines as you age, compromising many cellular functions. One of the first areas to show signs of aging is ovarian reserve. The complex management of oocyte maturation prior to ovulation involves many processes that all require energy, hence the natural decline. It has been shown, however, that CoQ10 improves mitochondrial activity and delays depletion of ovarian reserve. Check out this study that positively links adequate CoQ10 levels with fertility.

Vitamin D has received a great deal of attention in the media for the past 8 years. It is a fat soluble vitamin, available in very few foods. Often called the “Sunshine vitamin”, it is metabolized in the skin when exposed to sunlight. I often recommend getting serum Vitamin D checked, as low levels are correlated with difficulty conceiving. In fact, we find that most people who get tested discover they have low levels. In this study, researchers found that adequate serum and follicular fluid levels of vitamin D were associated with increased instances of pregnancy.

And last but not least is everybody’s favorite supplement, fish oils. There are countless good reasons to take a good fish oil supplement every day. In fact, I personally have been taking cod liver oil daily for 10 years, almost without fail. It can be used for cardiovascular health and to support a healthy cholesterol level; depression and other mood disorders, including dementia; bone density. For our purposes at Acubalance, fish oils support the important process of reducing inflammation in the body.
