Medical Detective Work: How I Finally Discovered the Cause of my Back Pain
For nearly 4 years I would wake up in excruciating pain every few months. It would come in seemingly random bouts, in either my left or right (and sometimes even both) SI joints. It would affect my ability to walk, sleep, think, and take care of myself. The pain would gradually lessen over the span of a few weeks only to rear its ugly head again in 3-4 months. I blamed it on yoga (I was completing a yoga teacher training program at the time) but even when it made me quit yoga for over a year the pain still persisted.
Acupuncture and LLLT
During a flare up, I had my colleagues give me acupuncture twice per week and used Low Level Laser Therapy three times per week for many weeks, what I would typically prescribe a patient in my condition. Nothing made a dent in the debilitating pain. As a health care practitioner, I knew the steps and tools I needed to use to heal my injury, yet I wasn’t getting any results. This was when I knew there must be another piece missing; another factor contributing to the root cause of my pain.
Then one day, thanks to my extreme nerdiness and passion for women’s health, I was listening to a “Fertility Friday” podcast on my commute home from work. The podcaster was interviewing chiropractor, Dr. Steve Gangemi, about Intrauterine Devices (IUD’s). I felt like I already knew plenty about IUD’s, but Dr. Gangemi surprised me by talking about something I had no idea was related. Back pain and IUD’s. My mind was blown. He states that IUD’s can cause a general weakness in the pelvic muscles causing back and hip pain. He even goes so far as to state the this pelvic instability can throw of spinal alignment and cause pain nearly anywhere in the body. And that’s when it hit me. My IUD (which has been in my body for 4 years - the same duration as my hip pain) was wreaking havoc on my SI joints. Needless to say I booked an appointment to get it removed the next week.
By the end of the day following removal, I was walking better. By the third day the nerve pain shooting down my legs was gone. By the end of the week I was 90% free of pain. I had finally found the root cause of my back pain.
The mysteries, complexities, and subtleties of the human body never ceases to amaze me. If anything this experience reinforced my beliefs in the undeniable wholism and interconnectedness of the human body. I like to think of us practitioners at Acubalance as medical detectives. We employ all of our skills and tools to find and treat the root cause of the pain or disease be it acupuncture, Chinese herbal therapy, cold laser, naturopathy, genetic testing, hormone panels, adrenal testing, and so much more.
