Laser and Acupuncture Soothe Inflammatory Bowel Disease
Inflammatory bowel disease is an umbrella term for an array of digestive complaints involving inflamed intestines such as irritable bowel syndrome, crohn’s disease, and ulcerative colitis. Symptoms of these conditions can range from mild to severe, and often involve excessive bowel movements, malnutrition, weight loss, fatigue, abdominal pain, and bloody stools. Causes of the various forms of inflammatory bowel disease are complex and can include a variety of factors from genetic and environmental to immune and diet related. However the major component of these factors are heavily influenced by inflammation, which fortunately, is a highly treatable condition.
A combination of acupuncture, Chinese herbs, lifestyle and dietary advice, key nutritional supplements, stress and emotional management techniques, and now low level laser therapy can significantly reduce the amount of inflammation in the body and reduce the symptoms associated with IBD.
Laser therapy treatment helps reduce pain and inflammation while enhancing tissue regeneration in soft tissue cells, muscle cells, and even ligaments and bones. It increases oxygenation of tissues and allows injured or damaged cells to absorb photons of light, which increases the amount of ATP (also known as cellular energy) production by the cell. Increased ATP production gives the cells the energy required to speed up the healing process and repair damage from inflammation.
In this study, mice with induced colitis were treated with low level laser therapy for 3-10 days. Results showed significant improvement in disease severity and a positive effect on disease progression.
Low level laser therapy is also a great tool for modulating the painful gastrointestinal and abdominal discomforts associated with inflammatory bowel conditions. LLLT does this by inducing an analgesic effect (through disruption of axonal transport in small diameter fibers), and lead to a significant reduction in central sensitization, or hypersensitivity of the central nervous system due to chronic pain.
The innovative techniques of LLLT along with the already known beneficial effects of acupuncture for inflammation and inflammatory bowel disease can offer those suffering from gastrointestinal discomfort and IBD great symptomatic relief and reduction in future flare ups by treating the root (inflammatory) causes.
