When we talk about optimizing fertility, one of the key topics we address is that of exposures – to pesticides, herbicides, and chemicals in the food we eat, the water we drink and the products we use. Of course it’s impossible to completely avoid all toxic exposures in the world around us, but it is important (and possible!) to reduce your exposure by making more conscious choices.

Lately, I’ve had a lot of patients with questions about salivary hormone testing. Usually, when a medical doctor measures hormones it always involves a blood draw. So why am I asking all of my patients to spit?

One of my favourite news stories of all time talked about Janet Ady’s demonstration in 2009. At a gathering of the Children & Nature Network, Janet (from the US Fish and Wildlife Services) stood before a crowd and held up a pharmacy bottle inscribed with a physician’s prescription. The prescription was as appropriate for adults as it was for children.

So you’ve decided it’s time to start weaning your baby from breastfeeding, and you’re thinking – “now what?” Each Mum, with each baby, will decide at one point that it’s time for her to discontinue breastfeeding her babe and will begin the process of decreasing the number of feeds per day over time. When you’re first being screened by a fertility clinic, Ob-Gyn, or by your naturopathic doctor for any issues that may be present in regards to your fertility potential, one of the tests they’ll run is called AMH - short for Antimullarian Hormone. During the (often) overwhelming visit where your physician presents all of your test results, it’s a good idea request a copy so you can review them on your own time. You’ll see among them a test for... Read more

One of the most frustrating things for a fertility patient to hear is that they are clinically sub-fertile, but there is nothing wrong with their blood work – in other words, you’re perfectly healthy! But you’re not getting pregnant and we don’t know why. At Acubalance, we’re always striving to figure out the “why” – and since thyroid problems are extremely common and difficult to diagnose based on lab results, it’s a topic that often comes up... Recently, I came across an interesting article with the following title: Pacifier Cleaning Practices and Risk of Allergy Development. Health authorities in the past have told Mums that cleaning their babe’s pacifier under running water or by boiling is the best way to avoid transferring harmful bacteria from her mouth to her little one (bacteria like Strep mutans, the one that causes cavities, in particular). This article challenges previous... Read more

Numerous studies in the recent literature have shown a link between celiac disease (the autoimmune disease) and infertility for both men and women. It is not necessarily clear from the research why this link exists yet, but it isn’t hard to postulate some of the reasons gluten could be interfering with conception.
