More and more celebrities are turning to chinese medicine and acupuncture practitioners for anti-aging treatments, stress reduction, infertility, and relief for their aches and pains. A few years ago it was Gwyneth Paltrow first spotted on the red carpet with cupping hickeys all over her back and this month it is Jennifer Anniston sporting her cupping marks revealed by her open back dress. (See youtube clip below)
Cupping is a technique performed by acupuncturists that leaves temporary round hickey marks caused by increased blood flow to the area from the suction created when special class cups are placed on the skin. It feels good, like a deep massage, especially on stiff and tired muscles. At Acubalance,We use "moving cupping" for men and women we see who have back or IT band pain as well as "still" cupping for menstrual cramps. I recently attended a presentation for fertility acupuncturists where it was discussed using cupping for women experiencing infertility (Cold lower abdomen)
I always ask women before I use cupping, especially in bathing suit season, if it is OK since the cups can leave large hickeys on their back. Ever since Gweneth's cupping pics appeared on the red carpet they all say yes. But to be safe, I also ask if you have any weddings or occasions in the next 2 weeks where you will be in backless dress. If the answer is yes I usually suggest we hold off unless they are trend setters like Jennifer Aniston and Gwyneth Paltrow.
