It’s that time of year again for this one specific nutrient supplementation!
It’s that time of year to get your parents, children, friends, family, coworkers and enemies all on vitamin D. We say this every year but it is definitely one that deserves the repetition, especially since every year I see my patients not supplementing adequately.
Vitamin D interacts with various systems of the body including immune system, reproductive and fertility, mental health, digestive, bone health, blood sugar and so much more. It has a role in sperm production for male fertility and helps with the production of thyroid hormones, progesterone, estrogen, and androgens. It may also be important for uterine receptivity/implantation, follicle development, and egg quality - which is why I recommend vitamin D supplementation to all of my fertility patients and testing levels if there is infertility or pregnancy loss.
Deficiency of vitamin d is extremely common, especially in the upper half of the US and all of Canada. Low levels of vitamin D are associated with conditions such as cancer, autoimmune disease, infertility, endometriosis, PCOS, depression, thyroid disorders, irregular menstrual cycles and anxiety. Vitamin D’s effect on androgens and insulin are one of the reasons why it is so crucial for patients with PCOS. It has also been shown to improve depression for those with PCOS. Higher levels of vitamin D have been linked to higher IVF success rates as well as pregnancy rates overall. Vitamin D deficiency has been linked to a higher risk of miscarriage in the first trimester.
Because treating endometriosis and pelvic pain is my jam, supplementation with vitamin D was shown to reduce pelvic pain in those with endometriosis and plays a role in modulating the immune system and reducing inflammation.
Although rare, over supplementation is a thing and can cause vitamin D toxicity. That is why I always recommend following the dosage prescribed by a healthcare professional along with adequate testing to make sure you are within the optimal ranges.
We compound Vit D3 with vitamin K2 as it helps with absorption. And we encourge you have us test your Vit D levels so we can see if this is one of the underlying causes to your health issues and so we can dosage you appropriately too.
