Integrating Eastern and Western Medicine for the Treatment Hair Loss

Hair loss can be frustrating and embarrassing, and since there are so many factors that contribute to healthy hair production, finding the root cause of hair loss can be even more frustrating. But there’s a lot we can do to dig for the reason why this hair loss is happening, and what we can do to prevent more loss and even regrow hair.

Western medicine is wonderful for looking at what’s happening at the cellular level. This is where blood work will be necessary to check iron and hemoglobin levels, thyroid, blood sugar, and other hormone panels. This will give us clues and point us in the direction to where the imbalance is lying. Is hormone imbalance causing high levels of Androstanolone? Is there a blood sugar imbalance? A vitamin or mineral deficiency? Excess cortisol (the stress hormone) levels? Perhaps your over the counter birth control pill? An autoimmune condition? These are the questions we’d like to answer through lab testing.

Supplementation would depend on bloodwork and hormone levels, but could include iron (if levels are below 70), fish oil (for inflammation), or vitamin d, magnesium, zinc, inositol (for blood sugar regulation), antioxidants like NAC, or more. Of course not all of these will be necessary or suitable for everyone.

Chinese herbs

Chinese herbal formulas are wonderful tools to add for the treatment of hair loss. Each formula we prescribe is based on your individual body constitution, your body’s pattern it exhibits through the signs and symptoms we gather from your initial consultation. Whether it’s due to imbalanced hormones, chronic disease, or stress, Chinese herbs helps treat the symptoms of hair loss while directly address the root cause.

Acupuncture can be a great tool to increase blood circulation, regulate hormone balance, and decrease inflammation that can contribute to hair thinning and hair loss. Acupuncture also stimulates the parasympathetic nervous system (opposite of fight or flight) to calm the nervous system and reduce and regulate cortisol levels.

Laser Therapy

It has also been shown that laser therapy can help regrow hair follicles by increasing blood circulation to the scalp and reducing inflammation.  Low level laser therapy (LLLT) implements red and infrared light to decrease pro-inflammatory cytokines, promote blood circulation, and promote tissue regeneration by increasing mitochondrial ATP production through photobiomodulation. This can be added onto the acupuncture treatments to double the efforts. For more information, refer to the link below:
