How the Acubalance Approach Reduces Your Cancer Risk By 60%
I took an entire weekend seminar about a year ago on the naturopathic management of cancer, with a very well-known integrative oncology ND from the US. Having treated a number of cancer patients on the oncology shift in naturopathic college, I eagerly awaited what I would learn about his approach to adjunctive cancer care. I was expecting some complicated protocols and a heady day of mechanisms and biochemistry talk. I was surprised (and relieved) when he mentioned in the first 20 minutes that he would be telling us how one can cut their cancer risk by 60%, with three lifestyle adjustments.
I held my pen at the ready – I was about to take home a huge gold nugget of information. Just think of the possibilities! I could see 60% fewer cancer patients (which is great news in my book!) if we could get everyone to make three simple changes.
Want to know what he said next?
The scientific body of literature on cancer is quite large, and growing every day. From a best evidence perspective, the following three changes to your lifestyle can cut your cancer risk by 60%. They are:
1. Exercise: for 6 hours every week. It doesn’t have to be intense. It could involve 30 minutes of walking, to and from work Monday through Friday and a one hour hike on the weekend. But you need to be actively moving your body every single day.
2. Eat at least 9 different coloured fruits and vegetables per day. I know the food guide says 5 is enough (..so throw your food guide out in the trash). But if you’re eating the Acubalance diet – which is what we recommend all of our patients start with – you’ll be eating at least 9 servings of fruits and veggies every day. The easiest way to do this is to make up at least 50% of your plate from vegetables and fruits at each meal. And eat all the colours of the rainbow – green, yellow, orange, red, purple – every single day.
3. Smoke? Quit. You probably could have anticipated this one – smoking has been linked to over 16 different types of cancer, and is likely causative for many more that haven’t been adequately studied yet. You know it’s bad for you, and you know it’s increasing your cancer risk. It’s also harming your fertility (if that’s a concern of yours). Quit.
After furiously writing down these three steps in detail, I sat back for a second to take in how simplistic this truly is. This is the Acubalance lifestyle in a nutshell.
If it seems simple, that’s because it is. Your body is a truly incredible operation, and if we simply treat our bodies the way they were designed to be treated (by eating a plant based diet, moving every day, and not putting tons of toxic chemicals in them) they can function well into old age without developing chronic diseases like cancer.
Following the Acubalance diet and lifestyle does so many important things for your health. It improves male and female fertility, reduces inflammation, treats food intolerances and manages autoimmune diseases, regulates hormone systems and reduces inflammation, promotes alkalinity and… I could go on all day but… it also cuts your cancer risk by at least 60%.
