Going Nuts for Fertility
I like to keep things as simple as possible. This is especially true when I am working with patients trying to conceive. An often overly confusing subject, which comes up with all my patients, is what they should be eating. Paleo, vegetarian, vegan, mediterranean, flexitarian, ... with so many choices its no wonder couples get easily confused.
I wanted to write about a food, which can be one of the easiest foods to add into your diet that can have amazing health and fertility boosting effects. Nuts!!
Nuts are some of the most nutrient dense foods around and they taste great! Nuts contain amazing amounts of zinc, omega 3 oils, zinc, vitamin E, protein and fiber, all important in boosting fertility and optimizing your overall health.
Studies have shown how just adding in about a half cup of walnuts a day increases men’s fertility (sperm vitality, motility and morphology) without any other changes.
Brazil nuts are a great source of essential nutrients for fertility (such as selenium) but aren't even a nut they're seed. These selenium rich seeds can help with egg development in women as well as the creation of sperm. Pumpkin seeds and Cashews are other sources of key elements for fertility. These two simple foods are packed with Zinc that helps in the production of sperm.
Not only are the type of nuts important but also the quality. Trying to eat nuts that have been through the least amount of processing will keep more of the health benefits. Avoiding roasted and salted nuts and sticking with organic and raw varieties.
If you are looking for simple ways to improve your fertility adding in a variety of nuts on a daily basis is an easy first step. For a more in-depth review about a diet to support your fertility see our Fertility Diet section.
