Fertility snake oil supplements or the real deal
I received an interesting info graphic from a client. I am not sure of her intention, since it simply stated "I may find this interesting". Basically, it was illustrating how much evidence supports the use of different vitamins, minerals and other nutrients.
I am a fan of research. It is important to know what works, what doesn't, and its safety. The concern I have is, what if the current scientific model has made some huge assumptions that render the research inaccurate? Is the placebo inert? What about Nocebo? One of my colleagues was discussing faith and science. He commented on the issue of randomized control trials not being as perfect as they are presented. "…They also have faith that double blind studies control out unseen effects. And they have faith that results laying outside one standard deviation "are due to chance."
I do not want to debate the merits of research with my blog today. I want to address the benefit of testing for nutritional imbalances and correcting them to support the body's ability to self regulate and heal. Thus, you experience not just the absence of disease, but more importantly, well being and vitality.
So what about nutrients like Vitamin D, Antioxidants, CoQ10, Omega 3, B vitamins etc.?
These are nutrients not drugs. When you study them like drugs, then you may miss the 'boat' on their value to your health and fertility. Taking Vitamin D while eating poorly, having a poor lifestyle (lack of sleep, exercise and rest), missing out on daily connections with friends & family (twitter and Facebook do not count) and coming home to an abusive spouse, is not going to offer a cure to what is really ailing you.
If you test for deficiencies or excesses, and you correct the imbalances (supplement deficiencies), then you will see benefits. But you also need to have other lifestyle factors in place, because these are nutrients that support health, and they are not drugs that override your body's own ability to self-regulate and heal.
There are two paradigms at work in our present day - treating disease, and treating the individual with the disease. Science is always struggling between old and new paradigms. Once upon a time, our lead scientist thought the world was flat and the sun revolved around the earth. Those who challenged this belief and suggested that the world was actually round, and it was the earth that revolved around the sun, were ridiculed and labeled as their modern day snake oil salesman.
At Acubalance we believe we practice in the paradigm where the world is round and we treat the individual with the disease. Everyday we are fraught with those who want to hang on with the flat paradigm. I can promise you, if you follow us your boat will not fall off the end of the earth. :-)
Dr. Mark Hyman, MD, describes the functional medicine approach and this link explains the approach we practice here at Acubalance. The body has an innate ability to heal and self regulate when it is in balance. Our role is to find the cause of imbalances and treat the cause to restore the body's ability to self regulate. https://www.functionalmedicine.org/about/whatisfm/
This reminds me of a 40-year woman we saw at Acubalance.ca. She had hypothalamic amenorrhea (no ovulation) and had recently had a chemical pregnancy from an IVF which ended in a miscarriage. We used our integrated approach of Chinese medicine combined with functional medicine (Naturopath Dr. Kali MacIsaac). We saw her twice a week for acupuncture, prescribed Chinese herbs, dietary therapy and supplements. (Some listed on the infographic attached) Her ovulation returned and she conceived naturally (without IVF) and is now 12 weeks pregnant at the time of this blog. What did we do? We treated the individual and not the disease with an approach that many who still hold on to an old paradigm say is not valid. The same thinking that put fear into people that they would fall off the edge of the earth if they sailed too far.
We do comprehesive functional medicine testing at Acubalance. Ask to book with Dr. Kali MacIssac for functional medicine testing.
