Boosting Fertility One Berry At A Time
By Dr. Ryan Funk, Dr.TCM, FABORM on Fri, Jul 31 2015
We are all looking for the magic bullet when it comes to our health. That one pill or "thing" we need to do which will magically fix everything. This search for the magic bullet is also present with my fertility patients. Although no magic bullet exists, there are things which can boost your chances of conceiving by supporting multiple areas of your health. Some taste better than others! Berry Season is here and I wanted to discuss the fertility boosting potential of these sweet tasting foods. Berries all contain large quantities of fertility supporting antioxidants benefiting both men and women's conceiving potential.
What Are Antioxidants?
These molecules decrease the rate at which cellular damage occurs. Oxidation (the removal of electron's from molecules) damages the cells within our body similar to that of an apples flesh turning brown over time. Anything which prevents or slows this reaction helps keep the cells healthy. Antioxidants help protect the other cells of the body and slows the oxidative process.
How Do You Get Antioxidants?
You absorb antioxidants from your diet and supplements. Fresh fruits and vegetables contain large amounts of these protective molecules. As there are many different types of antioxidants having a variety of sources provides a good defense. Many people have began taking antioxidant supplements such as CoEnzyme Q10, Glutathione, Vitamin C and Vitamin E. We are now offering IV miconutrient therapy here at acubalance which can deliver high quantities of Antioxidants directly into the body.
Specific Antioxidant Rich Foods:
Acai Berries, Blue Berries, Black Berries, Raspberries and Cranberries are some of the best sources of antioxidants. Other great sources are beans, artichokes, apples, plums, onions and garlic. Here is a LIST of antioxidant rich foods.
How Do Antioxidants Boost Fertility?
Any foods or supplements you digest which contain antioxidants will help improve and protect your health. The role of antioxidants also play a major role in both men and women's fertility. Antioxidants can influence egg quality. The fluid inside of a follicle where an egg is maturing contains high levels of antioxidants. If the concentration of antioxidants are too low oxidation happens faster damaging the egg. Sperm production is also greatly benefited when men have adequate levels of antioxidants. Sperm are highly sensitive to oxidation during their 3 month maturation. High levels of antioxidants help protect them during this development stage and can have a powerful effect on sperm motility.
Acai Berry and Your Fertility.
An ongoing study at Colorado Centre for Reproductive Medicine (CCRM) has been completed looking at how Acai Berry improves IVF success rates. They have found that this potent berry has been able to help increase the number of eggs retrieved during IVF as well as improving pregnancy rates.
