Are Irregular Periods a Sign of Something More Sinister?

allison's picture

As someone that has had irregular menstrual cycles for most of her life, I never thought it was anything too serious - and that’s mostly because my doctors would brush it off whenever I mentioned it. I mean it still came eventually so it can’t be too much of an issue, right?

A study in the British Medical Journal indicates otherwise. A study following the health of 79,505 women for 24 years showed that long, irregular cycles in adolescents and adults are associated with a greater risk of premature death (under age 70) by. For women aged 29-46, those with irregular periods and cycles longer than 40 days were 39% more likely to die prematurely from other health conditions.

Although it’s easy to think otherwise (women’s period complaints have been belittled for such a long time), your menstrual cycle and ovulatory regularity are great tools for evaluating overall health and wellness. In fact, the health of your menstrual cycles has officially been declared by the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ACOG) to be a fifth vital sign (clinical measurements of health including body temperature, blood pressure, heart rate, and breathing rate). When your menstrual cycles come are random times that means you’re not ovulating regularly, and there is always a reason as to why your hormones aren’t being secreted at regular intervals. This could be due to nutrient deficiencies, stress/cortisol issues, inflammatory conditions like endometriosis, hormonal imbalances like PCOS, premature ovarian failure, thyroid issues, and more. An irregular cycle is simply a clue that something bigger is going on in the body that can have a lifelong systemic effect on your health.

We often separate our menstrual cycle as a part of our overall health and workings of our bodies. It’s easy to ignore a period, especially if it’s only an occasional event. The beautiful thing about traditional Chinese medicine is that we are trained to view and understand the subtle clues the body gives us in order to correct minor imbalances that can, over time, lead to a major health problem.

These statistics are pretty alarming so if you’re freaking out a little bit, I don’t blame you. But keep in mind that there is so much you can do to empower yourself.
