When patients see me at Acubalance fertility acupuncture clinic, their initial appointment always takes a little extra time. We go over labs results, talk about symptoms, and draw up a treatment plan together. Often I find that their doctors have referred them to a fertility clinic, but they’re still waiting to hear back. My usual complement of spring recipes have not made it into the weekly rotation yet this year. Given the late arrival of the blossoms (and my soggy commute) I have not felt inspired to retire my conventional oven for the season. As a result, I got creative with some root vegetables the other day, and was so deeply satisfied, I’m compelled to share it with you. If you like warm, nourishing comfort food for a cool spring evening, this is the dish... Read more

Once again, the traditional treatment modality of cupping has cycled its way back into vogue thanks to a recent sighting of Justin Trudeau’s forearms. The rest of his torso was suspiciously concealed, but since shirtsleeves are optional, we were hosted to a landscape of perfectly circular bruises. So now the media’s talking about cupping again, and it may be time to review its benefits, uses, and effects.

How many times have you heard that? The only thing missing is the shaky banana icon to highlight the most ubiquitous nonsense that flashes across your screen all day long. Just to be clear, there really is no “one weird trick” for getting pregnant or anything else, including losing belly fat, lowering cholesterol or completing a marathon. But labouring under the tower of “alternative facts”, how do we sift out the truth?

So many wasted years! But seriously, at the risk of doing a double-blind randomized control study to prove the benefits of... Read more

Blue Monday has come and gone, yet somehow still exerts its influence; grey sky, short days, unpredictable weather, and the post holiday blahs can be a real drag. If you’re feeling bummed-out with this whole new-years push to self-perfection, here are a few ways to improve your sense of well-being in these short dark days.

If you’re anything like me, even the word “cleanse” can make you run for the hills. The idea of going through the minutiae of my diet with a fine-toothed comb instantly makes me want cake. The new year inspires a certain extremism; sign up for tough-mudder; join a masters swim team; juice fasting; cross-fit; running group... the list goes on, driving a massive economy of physiotherapy as, one by one, all your friends injure themselves in the... Often enough, when I ask my patients what their diet is like, they respond with “Not bad. I try to eat healthy”, as if that was the beginning and the end of the conversation, and the intention to eat well can somehow sub in for the actual eating of healthful foods. Alas, the conversation has only just begun, and the key element, in my opinion, is inflammation.

When supporting my patients through their fertility journey, I tend to prioritize the major health pillars of diet, exercise, treatment and medicines (such as herbs and supplements). However, there is one last oft-neglected area to consider, namely, the use of household and cosmetic products.
