3 Ways To Prepare Your Body For IVF
By Dr. Ryan Funk, Dr.TCM, FABORM on Thu, Jan 25 2018
When preparing to go through the process of an IVF many couples over think the process making it more difficult than it has to be. Patients read about magic herbal cocktails or intense cleanses that can be hard to follow. It doesn't have to be mysterious or difficult to prepare your body for IVF. Keep it simple, understand WHY you are doing what your doing and stay focused. There are 3 simple things that you can do to help prepare your body for the upcoming procedure. They are simple things, not all that complicated but will help your body physically, mentally and emotionally.
Walking! Preferably Outside
Walking is an amazing and simple exercise. It is low impact, improves blood flow, regulates blood sugar and decreases stress. If walking outside in nature it also improves other areas of your health. Walking is one of my favorite things to suggest to patients going through an IVF cycle. It can be done even while you are doing injections because it is low impact. I generally suggest walking a minimum of 20 minutes at a "quick" pace where your heart rate is slightly elevated. The 20 minutes needs to be done in one event. Walking for 10 minutes in the morning and then 5 minutes at lunch and then another 5 minutes at the mall doesn't cut it. I call that 'movement" and not exercise. A minimum of 20 minutes of fast walking outside per day is the goal!
This is a massive subject and easily becomes complicated. Without getting lost in the small details we need to eat like our Grandmas taught us to. # 1 eat your veggies! fresh, frozen, organic, local, clean 13, dirty dozen, ..... Begin with focusing on getting plenty of vegetables in your diet, don't get lost in the small details. Once your eating enough veggies we can start to fine tune what types to eat and how to prepare them. # 2 Everything in moderation. Even good things can be bad for you in excess. My general rule of thumb is try to eat "healthy" 80% of the time which allows 20% of fun or unhealthy foods. #3 limit processed foods in your diet. A whole food diet (non proceed foods) will provide nutrient dense foods, high in good quality vitamins, minerals and antioxidants, all important for your fertility.
This is one area that can be difficult to control but does have an impact on fertility. Getting enough sleep has a beneficial effect on fertility hormones. The goal for most women is around 8 hours of sleep, those who are getting less or more may not get as good results when doing IVF (STUDY). If you are one of the women out there struggling with insomnia you have options other than medications. Acupuncture, sleep supplements, dietary adjustments and lifestyle changes may all improve your chances of a good nights sleep.
Acupuncture and Laser Treatments
If you are already doing the above 3 ways to prepare your body for IVF but are still looking for a boost Acupuncture and Laser (LLLT) treatments may be what you are looking for. These modalities of treatment help to improve blood flow, decrease inflammation, regulate hormones and improve Mitochondrial function within the cells. This can be extremely beneficial for fertility, both naturally or during medicated cycles such as IVF.
