3 Ways To Feel More Confident When Making Decisions About Your Fertility

Decisions don't always have to be difficult and most of the decisions we make are easy. From what time we need to wake up in the morning, what we make ourselves for breakfast and the clothes we wear are generally a simple and quick decision. Other choices we are faced with are not so easily overcome.  Financial and health decisions can be extremely difficult and feel like a horrible gamble when choosing a road to go down. When looking at your fertility options it can seem impossible to know the right way to turn. There are a few thing you can do to help you feel more confident about the choices you make while experiencing infertility.

3 ways to feel more confident when making decisions about your fertility.

1 - Why Do You Need to Make a Decision?
We need to be clear about what and why you feel you need to make a decision. If you have only been trying to conceive for 2 months you likely do not need to make a decision as this is normal and nothing to be concerned about. If you have been trying to conceive for the past 14 months you may need to make a decisioin. Deciding to go for a fertility work up or not is a good decision to make. Another big decision is if you need to go into IVF or try alternative treatments. Be as clear as possible about why you are wanting to make a decision.

2 - What Options are Available to You?
This part of the decision making process takes some investigation and research. Try not to base your decision on google searches and forum discussions.  Talk with educated and experienced individuals who can give you quality feed back about your specific situation. This could mean seeing your GP, Naturopath or Chinese Medicine Doctor for to see whats available for you.

3 - Put together a Plan of What You Are Doing
Once you have figured out why you are needing to make the decision and have researched some options of how you can move forward it's time to put together a plan. Talking with your partner about the different options and making sure your both on board really helps. Trying to go through fertility testing or treatments without the support of your spouse is extremely difficult. With moving forward make sure it mirrors both of your belief systems and know what the next steps may be. Once you have a plan of moving forward put together a time line. I will call my doctor tomorrow, I will make an appointment with a Doctor of Chinese Medicine within 1 week, ect. Goals not put into action will not help, putting a time line on your goals makes them much more achievable.

An example of the following steps may look like this:

Do we need to make a decision?
You have been trying to conceive without a pregnancy now for 13 months. Your frustrated at not having any pregnancy by this time. As you have been trying for over a year is it a good idea to have a fertility work up to rule out any possible problems or just keep trying? Go for the fertility work up as if a major problem is seen (ie - blocked tubes or no sperm being produced) this would make it basically impossible to get pregnant. Better to know now than later.
Options Available?
Seeing a doctor to run through tests for both male or female fertility issues. You can see a Naturopath, Fertility specialist or Doctor of Chinese Medicine.  All 3 will look at different aspects of your health which can effect your fertility. You may have other options available to you that look promising.
The Plan?
You can see 1 or all 3 of the above doctors for a work up. What are your belief systems and how do they play a part in this decision? You need to listen to the experts and others who have experience then make a choice to what feels right to you. Keep your plan clear as possible.

The frustrating part with couples experiencing infertility is the lack of clarity. It's extremely difficult to make a decision when you don't have a concrete diagnosis. So many of my patients have been told they have unexplained infertility and are reaching for answers. At Acubalance we use an integrated approach to our patients fertility! We help couples diagnose a reason why you have not yet had a healthy baby. We often work with western fertility clinics as well as our own Naturopath here at Acubalance to help create a treatment plan. We then walk you through a plan as to how we help you achieve this goal.
