2 Ingredient Skin Tonic
To support my skin from the inside out I consume this simple tonic almost every day.
Collagen is the most abundant protein in our body and makes up at least 70% of the protein in our skin. Type 1 collagen is the main form here providing integrity, firmness, and elasticity. As we age, our collagen production slows down (typically starting in our mid-twenties).
To give my skin a boost of new building blocks, I like to supplement with Hydrolysed Collagen (a bioavailable form of powdered collagen). It is easy to use as it dissolves in both hot and cold liquids. 5 grams daily is a good dose to support hair, skin and nails. I personally use a marine-based hydrolysed collagen (currently TruMarine) but there are good bovine collagens out there too. The main thing to look for is a manufacturer that screens for toxins/pollutants, uses sustainable practices, and hormone-free, antibiotic-free sources.
Vitamin C plays a vital role in collagen synthesis so I like to consume these two ingredients together. Freshly squeezed grapefruit juice is loaded with vitamin C, low on the glycemix index, and can actually help with blood sugar control (paramount for health skin). Pink grapfeuit also contains a good dose of lycopene which helps guard the skin against sun damage.
Chinese medicine has actually used collagen and gelatin medicinally for several millennia. It is considered a nourishing blood tonic and was often indicated for people with a "sallow complextion".
I drink this tonic with lunch but it is great anytime of the day. Just be sure you aren't on any medication that is counter-indicated with grapefruit (your perscription will say specifically). Fresh orange, kiwi, and organic strawberries are also high in vitamin C - just beware the higher glycemic load.
