Overview:
32 year old woman in sales. She came to acubalance to help support her during an upcoming IVF cycle. Previously, they had been trying to conceive for one year, she had attempted two IUI cycles with clomiphene, and one IUI cycle without medication, none of which were successful. Her FSH, E2, prolactin & thyroid were all normal, and her HSG was clear. There was a concern, however, about male sperm factor. She had some pelvic pain which caused her much anxiety. She was hoping acupuncture and Chinese medicine could help prepare her body for the IVF cycle, and to help keep her calm during whatever came next.
Treatment:
The primary treatment goal with her was to calm her mind, and balance her heart, while simultaneously using the research supported acupuncture protocol shown to increase success rates when done before an IVF procedure. She came for 14 acupuncture treatments before her egg retrieval. She was anxious about the medications, she was worried about the pain in her abdomen which hurt every time she went for a run, she was worried about all the ultrasounds & blood work, she was generally worried about everything. She also had two acupuncture treatments, before and after, on the day of her embryo transfer.
Outcome:
Two weeks after her transfer she came back for a follow-up treatment and she told me her blood test was positive, and that she was pregnant! During her first trimester, she experienced nausea and low energy. She did not sleep very well, and she was still experiencing a lot of anxiety and irritability. Then, during her 8th week of pregnancy, she felt a heavy sensation in her lower abdomen, and lost some dark colored blood. Although her ART clinic had assured her that this was normal, and although her ultrasound just a few days before had shown everything looks great, she was extremely anxious as she was convinced she was experiencing a miscarriage. I knew my treatment again needed to focus on calming her mind, and stopping the bleeding as best as I could, until she could get back for another ultrasound which would hopefully explain the bleeding. Her next ultrasound revealed a subchorionic hematoma, or a gathering of blood between the membranes of the placenta and the uterus. The fetus itself was fine, and so she was advised to go on bed rest and to take it easy for the rest of her pregnancy. She is now in her 27th week of pregnancy.
