Low Level Laser Therapy Treats Hair Loss and Alopecia
Whether due to autoimmune inflammation or bad genes, hair loss and alopecia can be an extremely uncomfortable and frustrating condition. The most common type of hair loss is androgenic alopecia (affecting up to 50% of the male population), and is commonly due to aging and genetics. There is also alopecia areata, an autoimmune inflammatory condition that causes “spot baldness” throughout the scalp. Low level laser therapy, also known as photobiomodulation, can be used to treat a wide array of hair loss conditions by stimulating hair follicles to proliferate by increasing the levels of heat shock proteins which influence cell growth. It also encourages the hair follicle to re-enter the growth (anagen) stage and prevent the development of a premature death (catagen) stage.
LLLT has been shown to be a powerful treatment for any type of inflammation in the body, including inflammation produced by autoimmune diseases that induce hair loss such as alopecia areata. It offers a safe an effective alternative to treating hair loss compared to the more common treatment methods such as corticosteroids, topical irritants, sensitizing agents, and immunosuppressants.
In this study, 44 women with androgenic (genetic) hair loss were treated with low level laser therapy. Results showed a 51% increase in hair counts compared to the placebo group. Another double blind randomized controlled study with 41 men with androgenic alopecia showed “significantly improved hair counts” and a 35% increase in hair growth. A review on light based therapies also showed positive results of hair regrowth for those suffering from alopecia areata. No adverse side effects were seen.
