Laser Therapy Shown to Improve Health of Endometrial Cells

At Acubalance we believe in a simple equation. Healthy sperm + healthy egg + healthy uterine environment = a healthy baby. Endometrial health and receptivity is crucial for the implantation process to occur whether in a natural pregnancy or in a pregnancy following any type of assisted reproductive technology (IUI, IVF). Approximately two thirds of implantation failures are due to poor uterine receptivity whereas only one third is attributed to problems with the embryo. Women with poor quality or thin uterine lining tend to experience poor regenerative and functional capacity of their endometrium, meaning significantly reduced live birth rates, regardless of age or embryo quality.

In a recent study, Low level laser therapy (LLLT) was shown to significantly enhance endometrial receptivity by promoting healthy cell growth and proliferation. Low level laser therapy, also known as photobiomodulation, uses light to promote healing, regenerate, and restore tissue function. When exposed to light, cells absorb the photons and use it to produce cellular energy in the form of ATP. When cells have more energy they have better cellular metabolism, DNA production, and cellular replication for the replacement, regeneration, and repair of abnormal cells.

In this particular study, endometrial cells were lasered for 16 minutes in vitro (outside of the body in a laboratory dish) three times over a span of 6 days. When the cellular response was evaluated, a statistically significant difference was found in terms of gene expression. There was also significantly greater numbers of PTEN gene expression found in the groups that were lasered in comparison to the ones that recieved no laser. PTEN is a tumour suppressor gene that protects cells from developing endometrial precancerous and cancerous lesions.

The study suggests LLLT can have a great impact as a new complementary therapy in improving endometrial receptivity and regeneration by inducing upregulation of endometrial receptivity genes and promoting endometrial cell growth and proliferation. It gives great hope to those that have difficulty conceiving due to thin or poor quality uterine lining.
