As soon as I saw the trailer, I knew I had to help get the movies message out to my community. The message – about how your thoughts and feelings can cause ‘Dis-Ease’ and that you can change your limiting thoughts to lead you back to health and mental well-being – was powerful and important.

Chinese medicine states the # 1 cause of disease is your emotions and this was observed over a thousand years ago by the sages. And now modern science is stating the same thing:  your thoughts and emotions cause Dis-ease.

Working with the mind (subconscious and conscious) is how I approach my clinical practice. I mostly accept patients who want to work on removing limiting subconscious beliefs, so they can get out of their own way to free up energy for healing and manifesting abundance in their lives. I use acupuncture to induce relaxation by engaging the para sympathetic nervous systems (PNS) confirmed by studies measuring heart rate variability (HRV). I often will use a version of the relaxation response studied by Harvard MD Herbert Benson and incorporate Psych K and/or hypnosis. I use my training in both Chinese medicine and functional medicine to address the physical and emotional of the individual. It has been rewarding for me and my patients to use this multidisciplinary and holistic approach.

I made some notes while watching the documentary movie  Heal, and I know many in attendance expressed interest in me sharing my summary. So below are my notes and I have added a few points of my own.

Radical Remissions – What Did 100 People Do Who Experienced a Radical Remission?

Dr. Turner studied 1500 cases of radical (cancer) remissions. The people she studied used over 75 interventions but, from her study, all were using these nine below. Notice how only two are physical. The rest are all mental emotional spiritual.

Here is Dr. Turner’s list of the 9 key natural interventions that those who had radical remissions all used:

  • Radically changing your diet
  • Taking control of your health
  • Following your intuition
  • Using herbs and supplements
  • Releasing suppressed emotions
  • Increasing positive emotions
  • Embracing social support
  • Deepening your spiritual connection
  • Having a strong reason for living.

Kelly Turner, Ph.D. Researcher, Author, reaffirmed what my observation has been, and I have concluded from my practice experience. To really heal, we need to address the mental emotional and not just the physical. And this is the Acubalance approach and why I incorporate mind body tools like Psych K, Hypnosis and relaxation techniques in my acupuncture sessions. The movie are is much aligned with our philosophy at Acubalance.

Stress leads to dis-ease

Stress comes in the following forms: 

  • physical stress - falls, accidents, traumas
  • chemical stress - viruses, hormones and heavy metals in foods hangovers, blood sugar
  • emotional stress - family tragedies, divorces, financial.

If you are running your flight or fight response then you are mobilizing energy from your gut, immune system, and from your higher brain centers so you can put this energy into your muscles so you can fight or flight for survival purposes. This means there is less energy and resources available to repair and heal. In addition, your body ages quicker and develops degenerative diseases.

Stress also causes:

  • poor concentration and memory
  • impaired digestion
  • poor detoxification
  • immune system (shields down) compromised.

Illness and disease comes from fear ~ Bruce Lipton

Our mind shapes our body and shapes our relationship with the world in which we live.

We can experience spontaneous healing when we change our outlook from fear to love

We have a sick care system not a healthcare system. Conventional medicine is treating the symptoms and not dealing with the root cause or the whole person. Many prescription drugs have side effects, create more toxicity and more chronic illness.

To put an end to chronic illness, use a holistic approach that influences your experience of mind body emotions. ~ Deepak Chopra

Belief itself Shifts Biology. The Placebo Effect  

The movie looked at the placebo effect.

When people are taking sugar pills (instead of medication):

  • They accept, believe and surrender to the thought that they are getting the actual substance or treatment
  • They then begin to program their own autonomic system to make their own pharmacy of chemicals that matches the exact same chemicals they think they are taking. Often, results are nearly or as good as those taking the medication.
  • Is it the inert substance doing the healing or is it the body’s innate capacity to heal? - Joe Dipenza

Bruce Lipton referenced an experiment of genetically identical stem cells. Put identical cell in three different environments. The environment determined what the cells became: muscle, bone, fat cells. What controls the fate of the cells? It's the environment that was selecting the genetic activity of cells.

Healing is Epigenetic - optimize the environmental factors that control gene activity. 

Consciousness interpretation, my mind is interpreting the environment. So, if I change my perception, my mind, my beliefs about life, then I change the signals going in, and change the function of the cell. I, by my ability to change my environment and by my ability to change my perception of the environment, can control my genetic activity. Change the mindset from I'm a victim of my heredity to: I am a master of my genetic activity.

There is a mind between my environment and my cells.

Mind is comprised of two interdependent elements that work together:

  1. conscious mind
  2. subconscious mind.

The Conscious = creative mind. When conscious mind is engaged then my subconscious mind controls the default programs that run. - Bruce Lipton

If we stay in fear and resistance, we not only waste valuable resources that we could use to heal but we are closed to opportunities & possibilities. Ask: what this pain or condition is trying to tell you? Answers can come into your awareness. Get the message from the condition.

Emotional blockages can lead to physical blockages - release the emotional blockages to prevent and reverse physical blockages.

To let go of trauma, many people use the following methods: dance, shaman, acupuncture, breath work, hypnosis etc.

We become more acidic when in state of stress and this leads to inflammation.

All forgiveness is self-forgiveness because all the resentment toward the other are still thoughts happening within us. Even if someone wronged me, it is the thoughts that continue after the event that are harming me, not the other person. They are affecting my blood chemistry and my physical health.

When I forgive the other person, I am releasing resentment, animosity, all that unforgiveness. I am actually forgiving myself. It does not mean you're letting the other person off the hook for what they did. It has nothing to do with them anymore. The continuation of thoughts has everything do with me.

Medication: Get Life Working for You, Not Against You

Many people are in a chronic state of stress, even when they are relaxing. it is hard for them to switch over to the relaxation state (parasympathetic nervous system PNS) where you need to be to heal. (We use acupuncture, mindbody tools like psych K and our adrenal program to help you take your foot off your gas pedal and apply your breaks so you can switch over to the relaxation state at Acubalance.)

Meditation is the best tool to heal stress.

  1. shuts down SNS and engages PNS. It relives stress.
  2. allows self-reflection (who am I)
  3. questioning belief
  4. mindfulness (self-awareness)
  5. transcendence (uses mantra).

During meditation, the pituitary releases oxytocin, dopamine, serotonin, endorphins. All these good things are released when we make a spiritual connection.

I will add that your brain is the most amazing pharmacy in the word. Rather taking drugs you can use meditation, psych K, hypnosis and acupuncture to produce these hormones (oxytocin, dopamine, serotonin, endorphins) yourself without the side effects and dependency from prescription drugs. ~ Lorne Brown

Use whatever tool you prefer to relive stress… (walk in nature, etc.). Prayer, meditation, and so on. The mind needs to quiet to feel unshakable peace for this to work.

An Experiment was done at meditation workshop by Joe Dispenza.

IgA (immunoglobulin A) and cortisol levels change when you meditate

IgA is better than any flu shot. It’s the primary defense against bacteria and viruses. It went up with meditation and cortisol (stress chemical) went down. ~ Joe Dispenza

You can use imagination through visualization to activate a healing response

  • visualize illness to wellness
  • think of Pacman eating tumors and tumors shrinking.

Prayer

We are deeply connected through a phenomenon called entanglement. Once something is unified, once something begins as a whole, even though it is separated physically, energetically it is still connected. We all began as one before the big bang. We are part of the earth and connected to each other.

Diagnosis = fear & sadness feelings come up

  • need to change the emotional state into gratitude
  • we normally give thanks only after we receive something
  • If you give thanks in a state of gratitude, your body believes it's receiving something. 
  • feel the feeling as if the healing has happened.

Pay now or pay later

Life is as beautiful or as miserable as we choose to make it

Faith in medicine

Faith in divine intelligence

Faith in our bodies to heal

Final Thoughts

Personally, you do not need to choose between conventional medicine and holistic medicine. Use both. Currently, we put too much emphasis on drugs and neglect our body’s innate ability to heal when given the right environment. Choose both. You do not need to ignore one in favor of the other. There are appropriate times to medicate. However, working on changing your thoughts and beliefs, eating well, adequate exercise, moderate rest and deep sufficient sleep daily can make the medical intervention you choose work that much better and often not require strong interventions. ~ Lorne Brown
